I would start with 2 but I don't think 1 is so terribly dated that it would turn you off, considering the site you are posting on. Just keep in mind 2 is the best game in the series.

Also, just play 1, 2 and 3 and stop.

Profanity: The title. I've been told by some people that I should start with the second Silent Hill, but I don't trust those guys. They're out to get me.

So I'm wondering, is Silent Hill still enjoyable these days and is the story and atmosphere great or does that only start with the second part?
The game has aged extremely well. Sure the graphics look ugly to some 18 year olds, but for someone who grew up with these games it looks great compared to other from the time. It also controls very well, if you're going to play the series I personally would say it's important to start at the beginning.
Am I the only one who liked the movie? I mean sure, it made no sense and tended to aimlessly throw stuff from the game into the mix if for no other reason than to say "it was in there". Still, I found it visually really cool and I really LOVED the whole SPOILER ALERT "6th Sense" type ending.

EDIT: I'm talking about the 1st movie. I just realized there have been a few sequals made but I havn't seen them so I can't comment on them.

Come on, us 18 year olds are not so bad.

Anyway, thanks for the input, everyone. Gonna go play sum Silent Hill.
If you mean graphically and by controls - it aged horribly. This game wasn't scary in a slightest bit for me because of the blocky graphics. BUT

the atmosphere of original Silent Hill and especially its soundtrack are still amazing. If you liked other silent hill games, you should definitely play this one.
It has aged pretty badly. Mostly thanks to the survival horror control scheme thats not up to par with times. Still if you can manage that and the graphics it could be really creepy experience. Back when it was released it was one of scariest games you could play. Its like almost 14 years since I have played it first time and the Lisa moment from one of the endings is still vivid in my mind.
If you want some SH experience try Shattered Memories its unique and worth checking out.

Oh christ, I just realized I've been 18 twice now and then some. :(
Played a bit and I gotta agree with whoever said that the blocky graphics add to the creepiness. This is like the zombies from Thief, blocky as fuck - creepy as fuck.
OP if you don't like the old Silent hills (1 2 and 3) then I would recommend Silent Hill: Downpour, the game is feels exactly like the old ones, but with over the shoulder camara.

I do not know why the game is negativly received.

Games are generally creepier when you have to use your imagination. A rare thing in this day and age unfortunately.

I guess you dont know much about Silent Hill. Lets not talk about what is scary because that is most subjective topic but making fun of this one means that you either have not played it or didnt understand what was going on the screen.

Generic monsters (worst design in the series) plus pretty weak story and average graphics. Downpour had some nice ideas that maede it above the average title but its not the rebirth of franchise some people are waiting for.

Yeah... :D Talk to a person who finished every Silent Hill game avaible on SONY consoles multiple times :D

If you like games like Shattered Memories when you toss fridges over monsters and character have bubble heads, go on, feel good about yourself.

I am not impressed by a game that isn't even canon. (because has completely alternative storyline) And not by a game who decides what an ending is like based on how long you stared on mannequins in a store.

Also, the game is NOT scary, because when you are safe and when you are in danger is CLEARLY indicated in game EVERY time. And when you are in danger, it's just a QTE retarded sequence with tossing said fridges over monsters.

Yawn.

Oh, I remember one fun thing about this game. It wasn't linear, but it really looked like the sims, if you painted your house purple.
