Ack, after applying the 1.2 patch, Heavy Gear 1 seems to get stuck whenever I launch a mission, and I have to kill hg.exe process... It had better compatibility without patches, go figure.

If a reboot does not resolve that issue, I think I'll forget about running either Heavy Gear game on Win7, and just run them on older PCs. Too bad.

I did get a reply from dp9, and had a nice conversation (their PR guy is super cool), however he asked me not quote him on anything so I can't/won't copy + Pasta it.
(not that I actually know anything more than anyone else, he just didn't want to be misinterpreted on anything)

one thing I got from it that I think is OK to share: it's not IMPOSSIBLE for HG 1 & 2 to show up on GOG ...

in other words we CAN get them ... don't take that to mean that it's in the works or anything (I left the conversation with no idea if the wheels were turning or not), all that it means is that getting a re-release of these games is not impossible (for example: System Shock 2 is quite impossible).

pestering DP9 on this will probably only be counter productive since I wasn't the first person to write in about these games, the same probably goes for Blizact, so for the time being all that we really can (constructively) do is positively promote these games on the internet and demonstrate that there is a fan base with a consumerist demand for modern releases.

pity that there isn't a source code release for these games to start up a Free Space Open like modding community ....

I hope with all the attention they've been getting recently we see these two games fairly soon. Like some of you I also tried to install both of these games recently. Heavy Gear 1 without the 1.1/1.2 patches works fine. Heavy Gear 2 has the same culling issues as everyone else. From digging around I've come to the conclusion that that is caused by the way new hardware handles Z-buffering. That is also why it still works on an old X800. Here's to hoping we see these games before the world ends. Either way, I'll be playing HG 1!

Edit: I just looked at the 1.1 and 1.2 patch notes. They both have to do with Z-buffering stuff. I wonder if we can't use Application Compatibility Toolkit to apply some fixes for that. I remember scrolling through the list and there was something about DirectX faking or DirectDraw forcing in there.

Edit 2: Could you guys maybe post the errors you find when you run Heavy Gear with patches applied and which patches you ran?

Edit 3: I started messing around in the Application Compatibility Toolkit and found a fix for Heavy Gear 2's culling issue. Full details here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/heavy_gear_2_culling_fix
