Just more proof that every game every made has a following somewhere.
HGL has got to be one of the most overhyped games ever. After being billed as the next DIablo it turned out to barely passable at best and a buggy, badly desgined disaster at worst.
There is a reason why it was such a huge failure in sales.
Not only did it have horrid launch problems, but even when the online play was fixed it turned out to be a very blah at best game. The less said about the single person play the better.
IMHO the game tried to do too much and was a mess. It would have better to have had a few well thought out classes rather then a whole bunch which were all badly executed.
And sounds as though the relaunch is keeping up the tradition of fail.

wilebill: What it needed most was the way it handled graphics. Textures were just out of control. Hard on a graphics card.

From early on got on the Test Server where I could change build every time I logged in. Nightmare was entertaining in spots.

Felt sorry for the ordinary devs. They worked so very hard to fix the game. I and many others tried to be supportive. But by the end nearly all of us were contributors to the Flagshipped web site. What worked well they eventually screwed up. Flagship seemed suicidal.

Anyway, I've had enough of HGL. Moved on. Good luck to those trying it. Hope they did manage to fix the worst of it.
Most of the flagship people seem to have learned their lesson about overeeach, and have had a sucess with their new company with "Torchlight". which is a pretty fun game.

If the game becomes popular enough to spawn Hellgate: New York and Hellgate: Paris (Paris Metro has over two hundred stations, if I recall), then I'll jump in.

Hopefully you'll be happy to hear this isn't the case. It's a very fun game, and seems to be everything at least I could hope for.
I played a bit and liked it but ultimately uninstalled. The game is basically Hellgate London all fixed up with some balance changes and a store for convenience items and the ticket. My only problem is I can't get into these types of games anymore it seems. Maybe its because I played the original bug-ridden one to death before the servers were taken down.

I will wait to see what the reviews and wom are like.
I admit, I am concerned that the games will get the usual Asian RPG treatment, which meand it is just a hack and slash fest.
I actually greatly enjoyed this game, despite its flaws. I got it from a friend (who didn't like it) and I hadn't heard any of the hype, so there was no danger of hype backlash. I only ever played the single-player, because a) I didn't have an account, and b) I read all the patch notes.

To explain b) better, the patch notes showed how the game was obviously designed to be a single-player experience, with a weird multiplayer coop added on almost as an afterthought. The patch notes contained things like "Mailboxes have now been added!" or (in a later patch) "We now have an auction house!" It was gradually, and ineffectively, trying to morph into an MMO.

So I just stuck with single-player, and it was fun. I even installed it on my new computer, and still play it occasionally. As an added bonus, on single-player you can hex edit the RAM and alter your stats, item properties, money, XP, reduce item feeds, etc. If you're curious, send me a PM and I can send you the .PDF explanation. (Not for beginners.)

Ultimately, the game tried to do too much all at once and ended up not doing enough. The use of item feeds irritates me, since it puts a big damper on your ability to get the best gear, but that's what the hex editor is for. It's still fun though, and I always find myself feeling obligated to defend it. At least the single-player.

Stuff: I actually enjoyed the game, it was stable and had some great game play on certain levels. I really enjoyed the sniper rifle and still go in occasionally just to play a few levels with the mod equipped sniper rifle. I liked the fact that you could reconfigure your weapon mods as you found better.
YES. Though personally I prefer the Rail Pistols to the sniper rifle, because the large projectile for the rifle tends to get stuck on lampposts and such, and it doesn't always go where it should. The rail pistols have a much smaller projectile, and generally it'll fire accurately.

It was trying to be both a Fantasy and a Sci Fi Game at the same time and never really melded the two genres together that well. Sort of trying to combine Tolkein,Heinlein, and Lovecraft Together and ended up with a bland dish that did not do justice to any of them.

IMO fantasy and scifi could've been done well if they'd maybe just made it singleplayer only, perhaps with the ability to allow a friend to join in via co-op like in some other games.

I liked the storyline as well, and thought it could've used some more pre-story or perhaps a few prequel chapters had it carried on, and loved the story behind the "demons".
I found this game to be a little on the dull side of average, but what eventually drove me away was not the gameplay, but the writing. Every character I met was fourth-rate comic relief, each vomiting one idiot sentence at a time into their paragraph-sized text boxes, forcing me to spam-click 'continue' and wonder if the writers were going to start giving a crap while I still did.

It's like somebody modded Diablo and replaced all the dialogue in Tristram with references to stupid internet memes.

Nearly every quest is different, they added an auction house and mail system. They added tons of differnt levels and made the game FEEL like a real MMO, its truly what it should have been from day one. there are repetable quests the ability to respawn any zone you want anfd change diffeculty on the fly.... plus exp bonuses for starting a a new character and so much more...

im hooked, again... its the best MMO's ive played since everquest... a kick ass community and higly active GM's that will take out spammers in seconds not hours... also they respond to most email type issues in 6 hours. and they run on EST (-5 GMT)

with the Catacombs, Abyss, Stonehenge, all the acts plus special stages the fully reworked pvp zones and 4 pvp play types with custom subway systems and areas you cant beat it :)

Its freaking HUGE.... at least 1/3 bigger than it used to be plus Tokyo is coming to double the size of the game.
