Draw anything. Random objects are just fine. Remember to have fun and don't be so critical of what you draw that it discourages wanting to practice.

before drawing things, draw textures, again and again. A fun way to do this is to draw circles and then fill them with different textures to create different type of planets.

1) watery planet, with a soft surface
2) gazy planets, with clouds and storms
3) dead planet, like mars, with cracks and dark spots
4) etc.

once you have worked a lot with textures, start putting shadows, imagine light source from different sources, from the back, the side, the front, different angles.

then look behind your computer and look at all the cable messed up and interlaced, take a picture, reproduce, multiple times. then you have an idea how to draw muscles. now buy an action figure (one with adjustable articulation). Position it, draw it, apply texture concepts, you can make the character look like it has muscles because you know how cables and limbs interlace, then you can put shadows because you know how light affects your character.

When your character is done you should notice:

1) He is fucking ugly (thats normal, this is where practice comes in)
2) he looks ill (thats normal, this is where practice comes in)
3) he looks crippled and injured (thats normal, this is where practice comes in)
4) he makes you sad (be a man and try again)

I tried your method and I must admit...it is fun! Mine creations look horrible, but it is fun.

i want to draw stuff too, i want to tell a story, and i think making a comic is a fun way to do it since you dont need several specialists (like musicians for example) to do it, still you have as much options as if you would make a movie for example, also drawing is like meditation

i dont have much money, but i want to work digitally, i own a small wacom bamboo pen & touch, its only A6 size, but i hope its not really a limitation since digitally i can zoom in and out anyway
also i am interested in good software for doing this, i am looking at manga studio right now which is pretty much the complete package for making comics, but 300$ ... and i think i dont want the cheap version
an alternative would be mangalabo which doesnt seem to have all the possiblities that manga studio has and is also not documented at all aside from japanese, but still seems to be pretty complete

any tips or motivational words for me? do you guys think A6 is enough working space? i am really a bit worried about this! what do you think about software? maybe there are macros or whatever for paint.net or gimp that transform these programs into the software i want, like stuff to create panels in an efficient way or defining areas on the page or managing a comic as a whole and not just page by page

Just drawing circles and lines over and over again can actually help train your hand and be a good warm-up. (Or so I've heard.)

friend, you need to look at what you did and say ''this is my style''. My best friend draws likes hes a blindfolded cripple schitzophreniac (spellcheck please) but yet his drawings are full of style, ill send you samples when I get home.

at first sight you look like you are minimalist, you make straight line, without any style, you dont fill your drawings, you add your ''textures'' at random spots around your drawing. This is a style in itself and work this way, don't try to imitate someone else or drawing will become a punishing activity.

nobody laughs, everybody who wants to become good at something has to start out with the level of the skill he has, and i am like level 0 drawer who wants to make a comic ^^

Sometimes it helps to have a goal, not just in drawing, but in anything new you want to learn, in other to keep on trying without giving up. Say, you want to participate in some contest or do something with your drawings that will actually amount to something instead of doodles in a page. If there's no real purpose to your drawing, you may feel like quitting after a few failed attempts, specially when you try to convey something specfic and it's simply not coming along on the page.

There's got to be plenty of resources online. The books from Andrew Loomis are pretty good (and old) but will also demand a lot of your time. Also, most tutorials online will show you a trick or how to draw something specific instead of just the basics, so maybe you're better off getting yourself a book with the basics, explaining tools, texture, volume, proportion and perspective.

Oh, and yes, practice makes perfect.

I've never been too good with perspective but I've always had a liking for drawing people. My style is more like american comic books, since that's what inspired me in my youth instead of today's anime style that you see a lot of on the web.

well, what are good communities to get into drawing? liek communities that do challenges or contests on a regular base and all the stuff that gets you into practise?

i am NOT an artistic person in any way whatsoever, but in college i decided to become a graphic design major. which includes quite a bit of illustration and which, for me, was absolutely the worst part of the whole deal (the best part being the 30 to 1 girl to guy ratio)

many people have said this already, but as someone who had no drawing ability whatsoever and was forced to acquire it, it really is all about doing it over and over until you're good. at first it feels like you aren't making progress, but ever time you draw something you will notice something new that worked, and you will keep that going in future drawings. you will also learn how to look at the physical world very consciously. (i had to be careful not to creep people out because i became moderately fascinated with human profiles)

for this reason, drawing well comes most naturally to people who just like to draw regardless.

Be careful with this though, because saying "this is my style" is a double-edged sword. It's good to draw with a distinctive style, but it can blind you to learning new skills and improving your techniques. Especially if you want to try a new style someday.
