I was talking with a coworker today about ancient games and how complex they could be, i remember a game i used to play in the very early 90s that had you running around a sort of very basic 3d landscape doing missions, and you could get into different vehicles and go from town to town, all this seen from a 1st person perspective. Also you could enter houses and talk to people?.

I am not very sure about the last part as i could be mixing memories of two games into one. What i'm sure of is that it run on a VGA 286 and that i must have played it around 92 or 93.

Anyway, my buddy seems to remember the same game but for the life of us we can't remember the name.

I'm sorry i can't give much more detail but this was a very long time ago and i just can't remember much else.

Any ideas?
The only game that springs to mind right now is The Terminator.

What theme was it in? Maybe it was Dune 1?
I also think it sounds a bit like Dune, though the vehicle sections and talking might also have been the first Tex Murphy game.
I have the Murphy games and that's not it, although the view from inside the vehicle was similar from what i remember. It wasn't Dune either, in dune you couldn't walk around wherever you pleased, just go to set scenes with predetermined backgrounds. This was one of those "go anywhere" games.

That's where the "old games could be so complex" conversation came from originally.
Think GTA a decade before GTA, and on a 286.

I'm pretty sure it was it was vector filled graphics, but at that age i didn't know them by that name.

edit: To be more specific, does anyone remember the old Mercenary games in the 80s? Something like that, but with better graphics, more things to ride around in, people, etc.

I already checked the sequels to Mercenary on Mobygames but that's not it. I'm gonna call this guy and see if there's something else he remembers.

Was it about a portal to another dimension being opened, and some big red bugs got out of it and started attacking everything?
I'm thinking MechWarrior.
Was it possibly Vette?

Whoa, that actually looks impressive.

It's not it though, nothing that has been suggested so far.

Is there another website like Mobygames or Abandonia with screenshots that i can check?, i'm trawling Abandonware sites right now by category, but according to most sites "sandbox" starts with GTA.

Ahhh, the wonders of being old.

Edit like a mofo: Fucking found it!!! It had an entry in Mobygames after all.

Cool, this post highlighted some awesome looking games I've never even heard of.

GOG needs to keep releasing more of these obscure games!
Glad you found it.
