Well, the installer does work in Wineskin under 1.5.15, but completely freaks out and dies in CrossOver 11.2.2. I've already posted in their Advocate forums about it. I haven't read up on this thread since page 2, but are there any other games besides the recent update of RCR that have this installer?

But, if you haven't already done that stuff, sandboxing is just window dressing because there's almost certainly going to be flaws in the approach, a sandbox is just another layer that people have to break through, it isn't a magic force field.
To be fair to Adobe, they did by Flash when they bought Macromedia, which is more or less the most exploited software on the planet. They've finally managed to outdo MS in that department. No wonder Steve Jobs was so keen on getting rid of it.

A GOG supported distro could go well beyond supporting GOG titles. It could be designed to actually run old games properly on modern PCs with the help of WINE and the like.

unfortunatelly new installer is not working properly in wine - on OSX it has ugly blackened buttons, in playonlinux it crashes (all with same wine version 1.5.14, where I was able to install and run previous versions of RCR without any problem)

I just installed Shatered Steel and it has the new GoG Downloader, like I said before but now seeing it first hand, I don't like it, even the installation bar looks less appealing.

You don't need Javascript to exploit Reader, by the way. There have been plenty of public exploits bundled into exploit kits that don't require Javascript. The only reason JS bugs are so prevalent is because Javascript (or any scripting or interpreted language) is hard to implement safely, so there are a lot of bugs (browsers have the same problem). Further, JS can be used to enhance exploit reliability pretty easily and with minimal effort. Most of the exploits you run into are poorly written and sloppy, so they'd choose a JS exploit that takes 3 days to write vs a non-JS exploit that takes 2 weeks or more (after all, most users don't disable JS). They can also deliver multiple exploit attempts at once with a lower chance of failure.
That said, Reader has a huge attack surface with a large number of font parsers, image parsers, Flash, not to mention the PDF parser itself. They are all part of the PDF specification and bug prone, so JS is not a requirement, it's just easier (and cheaper) to target. Still, one of the most prevalent Reader exploits you run into in the wild doesn't require JS to exploit and isn't related to JS at all, so if you are running a version that is vulnerable to that bug, you'll get owned even if JS is disabled.
Just keep it up to date and you'll be fine. I'd also disable any browser plugins that do automatic rendering in the browser (same for FoxIt), disabling JS will help but isn't a fix all. As for Adobe, many people inside and outside of Adobe have fought the "disable JS by default" battle and lost for a long time.

Going thru these updated Interplay installers, they definitely seemed to have cleaned some of them up a little bit and made the more presentable. Updated DOSbox, less clutter, I'm guessing the new icons are Mac inspired.
Good stuff GOG team. Hope you guys get around to the other games.
