Yep. Because Save Empire Earth project is kinda shady (they use pirated game client as I see this)

Gameranger is far more safe option.

If you only want to play with your friend then it should be easy.
I'm assuming you can't connect directly, so a VPN seems appropriate. If you can set up one (like OpenVPN) yourself then that's great, if not there's always hamachi. ( https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/ ). You will need to use the Multiplayer-> Other Multiplayer option in EE. It should work as LAN game, but if not there's always the Direct Connect option.
