I don't pay attention to the star ratings when deciding whether or not I want to buy a game. They are just too subjective as it is clearly shown here, especially when gog themselves didn't establish definitions for what they consider each level to mean.

I go by the content of the reviews as they can give you a much better feel for what the game is actually like. I will also go to youtube and look up LPs or gameplay videos of games to see what they look like in action ect.
I have rated one game so far. :-P
1 - hated it with a passion, totally regretting this purchase
2 - didn't like it, not likely to play it again
3 - liked it... that's it, I just liked it, nothing more to say really
4 - really liked it, will definitely play this one more
5 - loved it with a passion, wish I could buy this one again, just to experience the new joy it gave me once more

It should be noted that I have never given any game a 1 or 5 star rating. A game has to be really stupendously bad or good to get those ratings and so far, none of the games I have from GOG fit that.
1. I won't muster the willpower to finish it even with a determined effort (too boring, technical glitches, bad controls, etc). I'd rather do nothing than play this game.

2. Mediocre. Ok if I'm stuck somewhere alone without a book or another game, but that's about it. It entertains, but other forms of entertainment will almost certainly entertain better. Will probably never finish it.

3. Not bad, but not great. Maybe it's not that inspired or maybe it has significant issues marring an otherwise great experience. I'll probably get around to finishing it, but I'd have qualms about recommending it to anyone.

4. Good game. Fans of the genre will most likely be pleased with it. I'll definitely finish it and might even play it again a few years down the line.

5. Great game. Very memorable. I'll definitely play it again every so often. I'd even recommend that people who usually don't play games in that genre give it a try (get it on special or something).

1. An aborted fetus.
2. I got through the game and only cried twice.
3. I let it get away with stealing my money.
4. Loved it, would have paid more for it.
5. I felt like I was raped by it's pure awesomeness.
5- excellent
4-good
3-ok
2-bad
1-total garbage.

and yes people tend to rate very highly it seems.
I haven't played it, but I see Litil Devil has an average of 4.5 stars. I'm a little bit skeptical
5 - I love it, I had so much fun playing it!
4 - Quite good game, definitely worth checking out.
3 - I like it but it's far from being perfect and certainly not for everyone.
2 - Meh, why did I buy this?
1 - Get that thing away from me!

I haven't rated a lot of games yet though. I never gave a 1 and so far only gave Psychonauts and Arx Fatalis a 5 (I had so much fun with them that I'm willing to look past any flaws). Most adventures here would probably get a 3 from me because I enjoy them but their stories and puzzle design don't really knock my socks off. (Would be different if we had some LucasArts. ;) )

Lorfean: Seems to me this can be done either by left-clicking on the game in your shelf and adjusting the rating on the "Game info" tab, or by going to the "User reviews" section of the game's gamecard and adjusting it there.

Leroux: Oh, okay, thanks. I didn't check under "Game Info", I just checked the games list under "My account" (the alternative to the shelf display). In that list strangely enough you can add stars but not remove them ...
I found these two bug report mechanisms for the website/forum:

Would you like to do the honors on one or both since you discovered the bug? :)

Thanks for the links, I've taken care of it now. :)

The bug thread really should be stickied and cleaned of all reports that have been acknowledged already ...

5 - one of the best games ever, almost all is perfect
4 - good game, good parts overweigh the bad parts
3 - mediocre game, many bad parts, probably not much fun
2 - crappy game, I won't play it, but maybe somebody out there could like parts of it
1 - total waste of time, not even think of getting this
