Downloader or keys.

But don't bother. If you're not from the US or Canada, they won't sell most stuff to you.

How does GameFly work? It doesn't. They took over Direct2Drive, but people were given limited time to transfer their collections, and many former customers of Direct2Drive complain that they lost several games they had bought.

Also, Direct2Drive had their own peculiar copy protection system, which made normal patches unusable for the games, you had to wait for Direct2Drive to release their own patches for the game. I don't knowe if Gamefly changed that though.

But in general, I'd stay away from Gamefly. I just wouldn't want to support a company that buys out another and then refuses to adequately support the customers they got through the deal.

Proxy. How is DRM? This really sucks. I hope it changed.

AFAIK, they're transferring all the previously purchased games over to the new service, but for some reason that was taking forever.

People had a limited time to download an install those games before the new service disrupted things though.

Huh, would you look at that. I can finally download Riddick again.

I don't own that one. But sure I can look. The only games I had with D2D are available for download.

My D2D collection took awhile to transfer over but I think they are all there now. I had backed them all up and made sure to write down all the keys before D2D was bought out so the delay didn't bother me at all.

What I know: Since switching over to Gamefly I bought Mass Effect and Dragon Age from them. It requires you have to download their "client" which is used to download your games and activate them. After the activation though the client can be removed and the game will run fine without it on the computer.

What I think: You can install the game on as many computers as you like as long as you activate the game with the client associated with your account.

Overall the system is worse than D2D used to be, since it requires the installation of the client to get the game running the first time. Hope that helps.

My apologies for necro'ing this two-year-old thread, but I have the very same question right now and I wonder if anyone can give me any more recent information.

A few weeks ago, the Gaming deals thread seduced me to buy some Steam keys from GameFly, and I did so in all conscience (which is to say very naively without reading anything about the shop). And everything went fine, except that instead of asking me to transfer the money via PayPal, they asked for a billing agreement which allowed them to transfer the money for the games themselves. The payment went smooth, they got their money and after that I revoked the billing agreement for future purchases. Now they've sent me a bonus code for a free game, but I need to "purchase" the free game with the coupon code. And in order to do that I have to accept their billing agreement again. But it doesn't work anymore - maybe because I already revoked it once?

And then, when I tried to find out about what could have gone wrong by reading up on how GameFly works (which I should have done before making a purchase in the first place), I read something about monthly subscription fees. Can anyone explain to me what that's all about? Do you have to pay subscription fees to be allowed to buy something at this shop? :/ I didn't pay any, they just subtracted the owed money for the games, as expected.

I realize all this makes me look like a fool, but maybe a kind soul will take pity and enlighten me nevertheless? What are your experiences with GameFly? Did you buy something there, did you have to pay subscription fees, how does it work?

I think the monthly subscription is only for Console game rentals, where Gamefly sends a certain amount of Games through the mail for you to play per year and then send back after you are done (or you can purchase it).

I was a Direct 2 Drive customer that ended up on Gamefly after the buyout and haven’t bought anything from them since last year, but since then they got rid of their Client Downloader so you should be able to download purchases directly from the website.

I’ve never had to pay for a subscription to buy games there, if that is what concerns you. I don’t promote Gamefly here because they have many regionally restricted games that are not available to members of our Global community here on GoG.com.

I'm pretty sure the subscription fee also gives access to a small selection of PC games you can play for as long as you keep subscribing.

My experience with Gamefly has been alright as long as it's just a key distributor for Steam or Origin.

They really suck hard if they are providing the actual download & installer. I bought Call of Cthulhu from them during some Halloween sale, which installs the game in a completely broken state. I fixed it myself eventually (they had the incorrect working directory set on the shortcuts which made the game crash on start up), and informed their support of the issue and how I fixed it. Their support replied (3 days later) that I shouldn't contact them unless I had an actual problem.

Well, we can’t expect the GoG game-love quality from online distributers, as we get spoiled by their dedication to making sure we get our games working, though Gamefly’s response to your issue is deplorable.

I haven’t made many purchases from Gamefly, but most recently I got Men of War Assault Squad GOTY and two expansions for ARMA 2 Combined and they had no issues installing or running.

Alright, so that means it's fine to just buy Steam keys on a case to case basis and I probably didn't subscribe to anything without noticing it by doing just that, buying a Steam key? Thank goodness.

Still weird that it doesn't work for me anymore though, and I also feel a bit mislead because when they said "you get a free Steam code", I didn't read it as "you get the chance to 'buy' a free Steam code at our store with this nice coupon here".
