I think we need an external device or cable. But which one gives the most quality. Which device should i use?

Your best bet would be an AV-to-HDMI adapter (I think Nintendo make their own for the Wii, and there was a not-so-elegant third-party solution for the PS2, Generic converters cost around €40-€50). If your monitor supports HDMI, the problem is sorted and you can use a normal HDMI cable. If not, you'll need an HDMI-to-DVI cable.

How to deal with sound is another thing altogether. The Wii has a composite audio out socket that you can use to attach speakers directly. The PS2 to my knowledge only has optical out, which means you'll be dependent on your AV-to-HDMI adapter to provide audio out to an external speaker.

But the HDMI video output is identical to the DVI standard, which monitors *do* support.

Assuming, of course, the OP doesn't have some clanky old monitor that only supports VGA, but even so, a VGA-to-DVI adapter isn't expensive. I recall most graphics cards until recently even bundled one in.

I've been researching this for my PS2 and PSP the past couple of days. The PS2 is actually rather difficult. Most of its games are output to 480i. A simple component to hdmi or vga transcoder will not do. It's needs a deinterlacer.

I think the best bang for the buck solution for my component 480i PS2 and component 480p PSP is a HD Box Pro.

Apparently one of the differences between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI lacks the analogue signals, which is the only reason DVI to VGA adaptors can exist. In other words HDMI to VGA is not simple.

With regards to the PSP, the HD Box Pro is one solution (is that thing really safe?), but if your PSP is modded, you can use RemoteJoy to output your PSP video via USB to your PC. Fair point. You can do HDMI to DVI, and you can do DVI to VGA. I have a VGA/DVI adapter lying around somewhere, and my PC gaming TV has a VGA socket (funnily enough though, my monitor doesn't!), so I may have a play around later and see what happens.

RemoteJoy is a great program but I've recently become paranoid about input lag.

Until recently I've been using a tvtuner to play my PS2 library. It has just a humble svideo input but with the wealth of software filtering options it almost looks like component. I've been really happy with it but then just last week I decided to play through GoW. I found the game fairly fun except for the impossible QTE towards the end of the game. It wasn't the patterns but the speed with which you had to respond. Now I'm no fan of QTE, but this was crazy! I eventually powered through it out of pure stubbornness but it made me angrier than Kratos. ;) First thing I did upon completion was to google people complaining about the fscking QTE events. To my surprise, there weren't any hits. Hmmm... than it hit me. What am I doing different?

"Is that thing really safe?" -- It might give you cancer? ;) I believe HD BOX PRO is legit. You find plenty of hits for it on old obscure console/ arcade gaming nerd forums. It's supposed to be a lowend deinterlacer/ scan converter/ transcoder that does a decent job for a decent price. Micomsoft's XRGB series is supposedly the best if you have the money.

All TV tuner cards have some input latency, some worse than others. ;)

I don't know where I put it so I can't quote the actual model, but I have a an adapter box thingy that works as a pass through to convert conventional outputs into D-sub ....

works pretty good for what it is, you just plug the outputs from your console (or whatever) into one side of the box and your standard D-sub monitor into the other .... gotta play with the settings a little bit to get the upscale to a tolerable level but it's nice to be able to use my old CRT for gaming.
