Telika: wall of text crits Avogadro for >9000
I'm not sure if we watched the same show, that colonialism parallel is really something I wouldn't draw in this case. One of the pillars of the Star Trek is that famous directive that strictly forbids to interfere with primitive races, and among the other spacefaring civilizations mankind is neither the strongest or more advanced: if anything it's one of the youngest. And while each alien race is heavily stereotyped and tend to embody a specific human trait (here's the warmonger species, there's the greedy species, then we have a race of thinkers and so on**) there's no dominant force, culture or ideology in that universe, just a bunch of different species that struggle to coexist peacefully.
Also, many episodes have some kind of moral dilemma and the solution is not always black and white, they don't just slaps morals in your face, and sometimes they made me think.

That said, I can relate to the fact many things in the show are overly clean, optimistic and political correct, this is actually the reason I prefer Mass Effect 2-3 to ME1: the first feels too much like Star Trek (which in turn seems to cater to the stereotype I have of the american audience). But I'm fine with that, it satisfies my need to believe that at least in fiction, humanity will someday learn from its mistakes and find something better to do than stand at each other's throat.

**And this is quite common in sci-fi and, more in general, other kinds of literature. Actually, isn't it similar to what the ancient greeks did with their gods?
ST:TNG is by far one of my favorite shows. No other show uses actual math, physics, scientific theory, and so on to further-along the plot. Entertainment like that is SO hard to find now-a-days.

Babylon5?
I'll give you one of many examples:

In an episode, they talk about quantum theory. I believe it's in season 7. They use that discussion (or subject) to base their entire episode on adding a story, event, cause and effect to make sense of it all.

It is juuust a TV show buddy.

kodeen: And don't get discouraged by the corniness of Season 1 of DS9. That ended up being my favorite series.
avatar
Lone3wolf: They basically stole that whole season from J Michael Straczynski's "Babylon 5"...
That really angered me, but I think it worked out in the end, as B5 is remembered as being an excellent series (IMHO, far, far superior to DS9), with a devoted fan base. I'm more angry at the TV executives from 20th C. Fox and TNT screwing up what could have been a lucrative franchise. Anyone for Crusade? :)

I never watched this series or movies at all and wow I am blown away at how realistic it is.

especially from the time of 1960s when talking about such deep topics and issues like racism, religion gone wrong, civil despuits, politics (more realistic politics unlike star wars prequals :P) and there is SEX and of course good old fashion action/adventure.

Wow this series has so much balls and backbone color me interested, is there a streaming website so I can watch this series :)
Star Trek is the greatest thing humans have created. Star Trek is entertainment but Star Trek is also everything. Watching Star Trek makes you a better person. Star Trek teaches things to you that will make you understand the big picture better. Star Trek shows the world the potential humanity has. Netflix($8 a month, first month free) offers Star Trek The Original, Star Trek TNG, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Enterprise.

"Wrath of Khan" is awesome.

I had it on video disc (for you young 'uns, that means a "cd" the size of a record; halfway through you'd have to remove it and flip it over) and watched it endlessly. And I discovered I could do a mean Mr. Sulu impersonation. I could still recite practically all the dialogue.
I love it too. Ever since it was first shown on TV in Germany around 1970.
TOS with it many many contradictions like the hot headed J.T. Kirk.
A crew of 400 and only one doc and one nurse. An unknown planet, and the
first to enter were the captain, his 1st officer and some unlucky guy (who died a few minutes later).
TNG was great. DS9 and Voyager....i never liked Voyager. It was too unrealistic. DS9....well the
last 2 seasons were great.
Thnx Gene
