Most likely because all your purchases are tied to it. Have you not tried contacting support and asking them if it's possible for them to change it?

It's still better than having to make a separate forum account, like Steam. That's just annoying.

Maybe they could make it so that the account name and forum name are separate without making them separate accounts.

You could always make a second account, just dont buy games from that one only use it for the name.

Making a website where users can change their own name is often more trouble than it is worth, and it is relatively rare that a user would need a name-change, so GOG doesn't provide an interface for this. Having said that, it is most likely a simple task for someone with database access to change your name for you. Your best bet is to make a support request. My guess is that a friendly admin would be willing to change your name for you.
