Such things are always useful, to wrap our mind around the scales at stake there (xkcd also offers some good scales comparison stuff, on various subjects).

It also kinda shatters most old school scifi, unfortunately (I love "space 1999", but...). As well as comet-collision-alert journalism.

yes, you can see the closest once with the naked eye from the south hemisphere in months Jun-August, if it is really dark and you look north.
