Imagine this happening to Steam ... and then you see why DRM and tying games to online accounts is a bad thing.

evilguy12: I thought Sony (of Europe at least) said PSN users will be able to choose 2 out of 4 games and PSP users will be able to choose 2 out of 4 games AND there will be a month of PSN+.
That might be the case, but I haven't seen anything that specific yet. With PSN+ there are already about 4 games a month offered for free to members (not counting minis) and the only info I saw seemed to be indicating those were the free games they were referring to as a "Welcome Back" bonus, though without directly saying that.

Except if it happened with Steam, a quick visit to certain sites out there would provide modified executables that would allow you to continue most, if not all, of your games.

Wishbone: I feel increasingly ambivalent about buying a PS3 just four days before this happened. I'm just glad my son's birthday wasn't until after the event, so I hadn't had a chance to register with PSN. But I must admit, every time I look at the PS3 under the TV now, I can't help but think "Was this really a good idea?"

bansama: You can still play (single player) games and patch them even with the PSN down. So it's not all *that* bad unless you only really play multiplayer.
I don't really play multiplayer at all, but that's not all the PSN network is used for. Having bought Little Big Planet along with the PS3, I was looking forward to trying some of the user-made content for it, but that's also impossible at the moment.

Also, it's a case of "even when the PSN network does come back up, how comfortable will I feel about giving Sony any of my information?"

cogadh: It's not just multiplayer that we lost, we also lost a ton of the additional online features of the PS3 like Hulu, movie purchases and rentals, streaming music, etc.. As the PS3 ads are so fond of saying "It only does everything", except right now, it only does one or two things.

bansama: Well, we don't have Hulu here whatever that is. But technically, we also lost access to movie rentals and purchases as well as manga purchases. But all of those were way over priced to compared to just going to a brick and mortal rental/book store anyhow. So it's really not a huge loss as far as I'm concerned.
Hulu is basically network TV streamed over the internet. It includes content from three of the four major television networks in the US, plus additional content from sources like MTV, Discovery, TLC and I think some BBC content now. Between that and Netflix, it is where I get all of my TV entertainment from. The movie rentals were a little bit pricey, but in my area we are talking at most, about a dollar more than going down to the video store (not that there are that many left in my area) while being infinitely more convenient. With PSN down, I'm basically cut off from all video entertainment, since the HTPC I was using prior to getting a PS3 is no longer functional (part of the reason I got the PS3 in the first place). No PSN is a huge loss for me.

Actually Netflix still works. It will try to sign in PSN a few times, but Netflix will still load in the background and once it's finished it won't ask for the PSN log in any more.

Well, you should be able to buy PSN points from stores right? Just use those and supply a fake address and disposable email address, etc.

Okay, so it's bit more of an inconvenience for you. Sorry =/

If you had them all downloaded and installed. Which I don't. I have about 20 of my 200+ games installed to save space.

I'm not sure they're sold in stores in Denmark. I've never seen them here, but then I've never looked for them either. But then, I don't plan on buying anything via PSN, ever.

But I don't know what kind of validation they use. Can you use false information?

For me, it only works occasionally. At first it wouldn't work at all, then it would work after a failed login to PSN, now it works for a little while, then I get prompted to login again in the middle of whatever I happen to be watching, which re-starts the movie/TV show all over again from the start.

EDIT - And now, Netflix doesn't work at all (again), I just get a "cannot connect" error message. Probably has nothing to do with PSN's problems though, Netflix is probably at fault this time.

If you don't intend to buy by credit card, yes -- at least it worked the last time I tired it :).
