Lol make something small that you can complete. Try and sell it. Then take back everything you learn from that and make something you really want to make!
Here is what I would do if I had an awesome game prototype (and did not have to work for a living): Polish the game and make it play and feel awesome, but do not attach any form of creator identity to it or even a real working title. Just throw it out there anonymously and call it "Vertical Slice" and watch how the internet reacts.

"A vertical slice, but of what game? Anyone know? Is it still in development? Is it finished? I MUST KNOW!"

Ah, well, a nearly impossible dream, but since I'm not a game developer at least I can pretend this is how it would play out.
Proper computer version of Battlefleet Gothic.

Johnmourby: I have thought about this a good deal and I know what I'd do. I'd make a furry First Person Shooter.

What does the internet love? FPS games. What Does the internet hate? Furries! Can you think of a better way to hurt the internet?

Leroux: You mean something like this? ;)
Yeah ditto to what Maighstir said. Something more like Dust. Is the guy from Stranger's Wrath a furry? He dose seem to have a lot of hair but I'm getting more of a "alien in need of a shave" vibe than furry.

"Furry" doesn't always neccesarily imply fur. Lizardlikes and other furless humanoid-animal hybrids can also be included into the "furry" group, depending on how strict you want to be with the term.

Quite true. But it does normally imply biased on a pre-existing real or mythological animal. Chewbacca isn'r normally considered a furry despite being all fur. Contrary-wise the Navi from Avatar aren't seen as furries (at least last time I checked) on account of having no fur despite being blue cat people.

So while the term is pretty loose I feel comfortable saying Martian the Warrior is and the thing from Species isn't.
There are many things that I enjoy using but I don't think I would enjoy making. I'm pretty sure video games would fit into that category based on my limited experience with software.

However, if I had a wand that I could point and tell it to make this game for me and it could magically do it without any bugs, it would be something like what Nirth or jjsimp posted.

He is pretty furry and he shoots with furry things, but he's not really an anthropomorphic animal, that's true, just a weird creature. Anyway, I'm neither a furry lover nor a furry hater and I enjoyed Dust, so I would play your game without even realizing it's meant as a provocation. :P

Then I win either way. If it annoys you, mission accomplished. If you like I've made someone happy :D

JinseiNGC224: What type of game would you make if you had the skills, tools, and time?
...
I would create a small server based MMOTBSG - massive multiplayer online turn based strategy game.

Somelike like multiple Civilization games where player take roles and decide on smaller levels (town, ...).

But you have to do it right. No time pressure and no action elements. No ingame payment, just paying for each game session with one session free per month.

And one must under all circumstances avoid being similar to browser games. Therefore one must avoid the game mechanics employed there and there must be a full-flegded client and a single player mode.

For graphics something like Pandora First contact (http://pandora.proxy-studios.com/) indie game would be sufficient or something that is even simpler. Does somebody know what graphics engine they use?

Falci: I've actually played the demo to that one. I'm waiting for the proper gog.com release. :)
The guy's busy bringing it to Steam, so who knows when and if that'll ever happen. Don't wait. Just get it from Desura.

If I could make an Indie game...I would make a fantasy RPG using an Ultima VII-like engine including all the schedules and interactivity, but with a Western motif. I would let the characters use muskets as in UVII, and I would have players play Shaman characters and Gunfighter characters instead of mages and fighters. There would be mystical creatures like dragons, but they would be well hidden in mines. The dragons would be trainable, and there would be good dragons who help, and evil dragons who work for outlaws. The bad guys would be outlaw gunslingers or sheriffs depending on what side you choose to work for. The game would also be open world and top-down.
In short, if you combine the open-world Western Role Playing environment of Red Dead Redemption, (I know it's called a Western GTA, but to me it definitely requires players to play a role) the interactivity and real-world schedules of Ultima VII and the exploration and challenge of Divine Divinity, you would get something like the game I would love to make someday.
As for the engine, I would try to reconstruct the Ultima VII engine, but more of the Exult edition with updated technology.
Of course the game would be completely single-player and there would be no online version or DRM.
