It sounds like you've trained way more battlers than me, I will defer to your experience. I do know about the Everstone stuff, etc. My only point is, it is a ton of work, even if you use all the tricks, just to willy-nilly try whatever. It's also intimidating to people who don't typically competitive battle, they'll typically just have one or two ringers. In fact, my ringers don't actually have the best of everything, but it's Metagross and Staraptor, which are so over-powered compared to nearly anything aside from Battle Frontier I don't worry about it.
Also, I try to make sure I have a couple Pokemon that put up a good show of a fight but who will lose if I decide they need to. I know, it's a dirty trick, but it's better than crushing a nine year old over and over again (sometimes she will legitimately win, I just don't want her to have any long losing streaks).
