When I first saw pictures of a remote island with lots of mid 20th-century shipwrecks on it from Far Cry 3 development blogs, I thought "Hey! This is great! They're coming back to the Jack Carver story, and maybe we get to see what happened to the mutants after he left". This was further reinforced by screencaps of the islands' inhabitants, with their red eyes and stuff. I had thought that maybe the mutants had "hyper-evolved" or something and took a more human form, but were still basically animals. All that Dr. Moreau shit.

Of course, with the absence of any actual CryTek team members on the development team, I'm beginning to think that the game is just going to be another one of those "discourse on human nature" kinda things, and that Ubisoft is taking it back to a tropical island to try and lure in ill-informed fans of the first game who didn't much care for the second (I had really hoped that "The Jackal" would reveal himself to be Jack Carver, but that wasn't happening).

It looks like CryTek is focusing on Crysis 3 or whatever. So why doesn't Ubisoft just come up with a new name for the game? Are they afraid people will accuse them of ripping off Far Cry if it's not already called Far Cry?
I remember reading that Jack Carver was dropped from Farcry 2 because gamers didn't like him. Same as the mutants, actually.

Farcry 2 was a nice game, but the ever respawning enemies at those posts were extremely annoying.

I'm not surprised they're telling another separate story with 3, since the one from 2 had its closure.
Well... Far Cry 3 looks like a pretty cheap shooter from trailers, I mean in both first and second part, player would die pretty fast with that approach. I'm also really sorry they decided to NOT follow up on the good things in FC2, like absolutely fantastic HUD, map, and weapon handling.

This!

Was this ever patched/modded out?

And I doubt this will be anywhere near as open ended either. All in all I'm not overly impressed with this and that's before you get into the whole UbiDRM bollocks.
I loved FC1. Hated FC2 (respawning & too much travelling around, boring & dull despite the efforts of developers In Africa Diaries whatever they called - going there to get ideas blah blah). If FC3 is going to be more of the same.. pass.

It's UBI Cry,not Far Cry.
Carver's voice acting was laughable, but had a strange charm to it. I liked his almost John McClane feel (although he was in the military, not just a cop), but the game was hard as hell for me. Haven't played Far Cry 2 yet. 3 looks kinda cool.
Is the 2nd one worth playing?
I played the first one (though never got too far) and liked it quite a bit.
I saw someone play the 2nd one on the Xbawks and it completely killed it for me (FPSes look so awkward on consoles). I did pick it up from a sale some time ago so I do have it. Should I try it?

In my opinion? Yes. I'll summarize:

THE GOOD:
- awesome gunplay. Very visceral and brutal.
- beautiful world
- FIRE! And it spreads realistically, too.
- lots of different ways to do things, from sniping and stealth to flamethrower maniac, and it all feels great to do.
- The Jackal is an enjoyable character

THE BAD:
- story that starts out ok, but gets really stupid
- enemies respawn at guardposts fairly often
- stealth can be a little touchy
- you often spend a long time traveling to locations
- people attack you even if you're doing missions for their faction. Which is explained, but not convincingly.
- repetitive unless you are proactive about varying things yourself ("hmm...maybe I'll try sniping for this mission.")
- promised things that it didn't quite deliver

Probably my favorite flawed FPS. Loads of fun, if you can deal with its weak points.

People here forgot to mention Far Cry 2's Hideous Malaria system. It really put me off playing the game.

Sounds good, downloading now!

really? How come? It was basically just a random element that sometimes showed up in combat. I never found it to be anything that noticeable.
It looks like it is.

Unlike jefequeso, I thought Far Cry 2 was a waste of money. I got to Act 2 before I finally gave up and just uninstalled the game. My problem with the game was that it was a failed premise, a soulless thing living inside a gorgeous, promising husk. The gunplay is really good at first, and during the first few hours of the game, you get the feeling the multiple approach thing really works. Problem is, you may realize eventually that it suffers from having only one or two efficient ways to overcome a fight. It's also a game of "Me vs The Whole World". You will occasionally run into friends who will need your help in a fight, but it's largely you babysitting them. There's none of the dynamic AI from games like STALKER.

Oh and there's the infamous enemies respawning at spawn points all the time. It goes like this: you travel to a certain location on a mission; you run into an enemy spawn point; you kill everyone inside, or you run away and they chase you and you have to get off your vehicle to fight them; you continue on your way, and run into another checkpoint; repeat process. When you're done with the mission and you return to town or the nearest bus stop, you go through the.exact.same.motions again. Yep that's pretty much what you'll be doing throughout the whole game. There's no element of suspense or unpredictability, and despite the promising story and setting, it doesn't play out all that well because everyone's just a spiteful bastard who will shoot you on sight, unless you're in a town.

Lastly, I absolutely loathe trying to get a cure for malaria. It should have been great, but it's just like any other mission you find in the game - make your way to point A, stop along the way to fight some enemies, continue to point A.

Gorgeous scenery though. I remember chasing zebras. That's a nice touch to an otherwise forgettable game.
