I meant to play the first to games in the series when I heard about expansion packs and some Easter eggs with references made to Red Faction. Then this morning, I see this "Gangstas in Space" shit and I think "Now's the time to pick it up". I just can't turn down that much surrealism (I've had a hunger for it ever since I saw that first Prince Charles Dalek).

Is the third game in the series close ended enough that I can pick it up without worrying too much about references made to the first two, or will there be plot holes aplenty?

My brother finished it recently without having played the first two and he didn't complain about anything of the kind.
In any case, I do not recommend SR2. I got hyped for SR3 after seeing the trailer during the summer, so I decided to give SR2 a go while waiting for the release. It was such a huge disappointment that it put me off the series. I still haven't played SR3 because of that.

I watched a while playthrough from my GF and we've both never played a Saints Row game. We really never felt like we were missing out any important information whatsoever.

And I must say I think it's a great game.

Saints Row 3 is one of the best games I've played in 2011, nuff said.
Everything is so fun and driving is super smooth. And it's funny too at times. I find it hard to go back to GTA after SR3 wtih the exception of GTA: Vice City.

Yeah, I can't wait for Rockstar to start making the "off-the-wall" stuff again. I liked GTA and GTA 2 because there was only so much "seriousness" you could put into a top-down "crime simulator". Bully was a lot of fun, too.

I thought Pandemic had it "just right" with Mercenaries 2. I mean, the whole game is based on getting revenge on a guy who shot your character in the ass.
