I've been playing torchlight on steam over the last couple of days and it keeps overheating my laptop, which doesn't happen with my gog games. Steam also now seems more bloated than when I first got it, does anyone have an idea of what kind of processor (and graphics with the overlay) overhead steam is adding to playing games these days, as it's just getting stupid.

Its why I'm holding off getting torchlight 2 till it arrives on gog, and I wish I had grabbed the 1st one when it was on sale.

Oh well I guess I should install sacrifice...
no, no such troubles.

Have you tried clearing your fans and air intake thingies? When my laptop starts overheating this does usually the trick. A can of compressed air is always in the house.

I've given a good clean, I think it's because it's a 11.6 with dedicated graphics, so when it's at the limit it becomes a little cooker.

I assume it's also just because it's getting older, but I'm just finding steam more annoying, that or I'm getting older :D

Yeah, I just use steam as a browser and download manager. I let the other people (read "the kids") use it for the other things, no use to me at all. :)

(I don't find it annoying, though)

I guess you should...
I had no clue Steam added crap to their games. Seriously, I figured with the exception of the possible DRM that you were pretty much getting the same product wherever you bought it. Far out.

OT I just noticed you are one point from 2 stars; lets see what we can do about that speeding that up. I'm about to lose one myself but shit happens. :P

They don't.

It is the Steam launcher which has built in social functions and so on, if you want to make use of them. It does not add anything to the games, per se.

well.... maybe achievements, but you get in game achievements those outside of Steam also.

I learn something new every day. Thanks. :D

BTW I've noticed GameSpot is now posting Steam achievements in their 'Hints & Tips' section. How long have they been doing that?

You can keep eye on Steam's CPU usage in the Windows Task Manager - Process part. Unless there's something wrong it's quite unlikely Steam would be a main culprit of overheating your system though, it's far far more likely to be the GPU or the processing required from the game. (or a combination of both)

Sounds like you're using Steam as a scape goat for your pc playing up. You're playing game on a laptop and it's overheating... that's extremely common and a very good reason why you should always play modern games on a desktop.
The Steam client is old and has been getting more and more bloated every time it is updated, but Valve won't rewrite the client from the ground up for fear of losing customers in the transition.

well, my Steam client is more lightweight today than it was a couple of years ago. It takes less space and uses less CPU. Not sure which Steam client you are using?

I agree that desktops are always the way to go, but sadly it's not always possible, I'm seeing if I have the same game on both gog and steam to see if there is actually a difference, so far the steam client seems to use 1-2% of the Cpu but 150MB of ram, which I know isn't much, but when you're pushing a system every little bit helps :D

Have to tried disabling steam in-game overlay?

Steam - Settings - In game - disable Steam Community in-game
