Personally, I don't play these kind of games, so I don't necessarily care as far as Call of Duty is concerned. It's more the potential gaming trend that concerns me.
While acknowledging that Kotick is a great force of evil (and a huge jerk), I can't really say I'm surprised or blame Activision for trying this with Call of Duty. His job is to make the company money, and if he thinks people will pay a subscription fee to play future versions of this franchise, he pretty much has to try it.
This is not to say that I agree with this trend, but I'm not surprised by it. Every potential customer has a chance to vote with their money, and if enough people support trends like this, we'll see more of it. Sadly, I think we'll see much more of this type approach to games in years to come.
