Oddly enough, I was very hesitant to join any forums because of threats from people on line. When I first got into social media on IRC (shortly after I finished high school when IRC was still brand new) I became an online junkie and met some really groovy people but I also met a lot of goofy people who were constantly threatening to "get me" be it virtually or physically. I was never frightened but it got to be not worth being on line dealing with them. I ended up in here on accident last month because of the DUKE3D giveaway and I don't mind admitting for the 1st few days I was expecting someone in here to remind me why I quit doing this so many years ago. It hasn't happened yet and in this forum I no longer expect it to.

Yup those are the kinds of things that make me think that the rep is not working as intended.

Ok, so somebody might wonder what are trashy/inappropriate comments. Those would be the ones that don't follow the forum guidelines below:(also from the link)

I'm going to call bullshit if people seriously think that all of the downvoted posts have contained these violations. I've seen posts that have been downvoted just because people didn't agree with a point of view .Sure there also might have been some slightly rude comments that have also been downvoted, but a very large portion of them haven't been " harassing, intimidating, threatening, discriminating, obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit " or troll posts. I guess you could consider some posts" offensive in any other way" if you're not wearing big boy internet pants and can't handle any posts where somebody insinuates that you're being kind of a dumbass, but whatever. In that case even a significantly larger portion of the board should be hidden, which just goes to show that the OP is right about the inconsistency.

I would post more links that I think have been downrated unfairly, but as I have said many times in the past, the search feature isn't even worth bothering with. Also, some of the posts might have been upvoted anyway to compensate for the low rating, so they wouldn't be hidden anymore So now somebody might say "see? It doesn't matter anyway!" But the intent of the system was never to have people rate posts highly just to overcome the fact that a bunch of people had downvoted it,

Rep here is about as useful as the reviews here, I doubt anybody cares, other than the down-reppers about the +/- buttons, Its a game forum, it's not important.

Easy for you to say, there are some giveaways you can only get in with a certain amount of rep :P
But I guess people who do these giveaways are entitled to their own rules ;)

So... who actually does get downrepped exzessivly? I have only be around for two months, but somehow I only saw a handful of complain threads about the phenomenon in question, not the thing itself...

How is rep actually distributed here to begin with?
Is it based on the rep you have yourself or does everyone put in the same weight?

GOG should just increase the amount of downvotes required for a post to be hidden. Would solve most of these issues.

I remember JCD-Bionicman had a bit of a rough start on the forums. His first threads were basically anti-liberal, anti-Democrat, anti-secularist political rants that didn't make a particularly good first impression. He did eventually calm down and has become a fairly established member of the community now, but some asshats have seen fit to downvote his posts anyway, just because it was him.

The point was, post here a while without caring and you will accumulate rep naturally, unless you're an asshole. And then you can enter those contests or whatever.

I don't see an issue with restricting that stuff to people who have been here a while.

You know what pisses me off? No one ever complains about NOT being repped, and that's the real abuse here, it’s not the act of being downrepped, but that of not being repped at all! At least if you're downrepped it shows some people out there care enough about what you're saying to neg you. Really, if any button should be removed it's the + button, because everything posted should be considered good by default, we don't need the + simply to highlight the posts of the popular crowd. Because that’s all it is, a popularity contest, don’t tell me it’s not, I know it is! I see people getting uprepped without giving games away, what the fuck are they saying that I'm not? I mean, what the fuck?! I’m in here every day posting, does anyone even notice? What do I need to do to get a little rep love too?! Oh fuck it, I don’t need this!
