I only find it on torrent or private websites which are IMO not trustworthy sources. So does anyone who is for a longer time on this forum have HexenGL and can send it? [It is a modification that allows you to play HeXeN in OpenGL with hi-res textures and should not include game data]

I can only find good downloads for HeXeN 2, but not for the first HeXeN.

Have you considered the Doomsday engine?
It supports Doom 1 & 2 (and maps and such) as well as Hexen and Heretic

(warning, adding high resolution textures and extra lighting effects may cause these good old games to stop playing on good old systems and require a more beefy system (e.g. I was unable to play it on my laptop with effects on ));

There's also zdoom. Not sure if it supports OpenGL, but I used it to play Hexen and it was very good.
GZDoom will run Hexen in OpenGL, but I'm not certain if it will run hires textures. I don't play with them, anybody know?
Skulltag is the best platform to play Doom Engine wads on. It works on Linux, Mac and Windows too. Can't speak on the Mac or Linux quality but the windows one is far and away the best source port I've used.

I would also suggest Skulltag. It's easy to set up and works great.

Wow, thanks for pointing this out - I'd never heard of Skulltag (I run Hexen/Heretic/Doom etc. on Doomsday Engine with mods currently). I just checked and it's nice to see that the Mac port is up-to-date with with the Linux and Windows ports. I'll check it out soon!

No problem, glad to see more people trying it. Deathmatch and co-op on it are awesome by the way.

I played with Doomsday on and off for a few months last year but didn't like it too much. The visual effects are awesome but you run into quite a few odd glitches with visual mods and fan-made WADs. I couldn't open doors in Hordes of Chaos for Heretic with the graphical mods on while I could with them off for example.

I think someone is remaking Hexen(with new maps of course) in Doom3 as a TC/Mod. It looks to be good, and is on ModDB AFAIK.

Hexen: Edge of Chaos. It is a re-imagining type thing of Hexen. It has a demo out where you can play the cleric.

I hope they finish it. I'd play but 1. I like other classes more, and 2. Like playing more fleshed out demos before getting my hoped up. Still it does look good so far.

I've tried out a whole bunch of Doom source ports (for a few years I ran Doom Legacy, then moved to PrBoom and PrBoom+ before moving on to Doomsday) and currently Doomsday's worked the best for me, though yes, with all of the eye candy turned on and high-res textures and effects added the game gets rather glitchy and laggy. Currently my only beefs with Doomsday are that they haven't ported the beta 2.0 binaries to OS X yet, and the configuration options in the control panel are bewildering to an ordinary user like me.

Still, it's great to see yet another modern option for OS X users playing doom.

I've heard of the Hexen remake - hopefully it won't go the way of Black Mesa and take something like 10 years to finish.
Zdoom is good if you're looking for non-modified graphics to get the feeling you're running the old Hexen, the only adjustment is possibility to alter the controls, resolution and be able to look up and down. The graphics will still be old and flat (just like I like them ;]).

zDoom allowed you to add simple lighting effects like lens flare as well, I liked the effect on the plasma rifle filling up my screen with pretty lens flares. Been a long time since I used zDoom though, was back when I still had a 3DFX card, and I only had 1 from the first series.

I still think I have a couple of screengrabs I did, focusing on one area, taking a screenshot, stepping slightly to the side, focusing on the same area, screenshot. Put side by side in editor and when you go crosseyed you get a third image between the two, and even with such an old engine and plain graphics it still looked like it had actual depth, more than the last example of 3D glasses for HDTVs I saw in a store. Of course the downside is you get a headache sitting crosseyed, but it sure provided a great feeling of really experiencing what the world of Doom looked like.
