Am I the only one who thinks the tone of the sale is genious and hilarious? Have anyone of you actually BEEN to the Pirate Bay? Most comments are "I feel bad, but I'll buy it later, to support the company."
Well the company basically just said "I'm waiting.."
I think it's clever. And to the people overreacting. Theyre not calling you pirates. Theyre calling pirates, pirates.

Navagon: Might not be a bad idea. It's a great game. But that's no way to sell it.

akwater: Got a reply from my email.
"I'm sorry you understand our promotion this way. this sale isn't only for pirates but also for everybody who don't have the game yet and is interested in playing the full version. we are trying to appeal to pirates and to inform also others this way.
in any case, thank you very much for your support and also for your opinion, we appreciate it.
best,
jakub"
I am not sure if they really understand that a person would be put off of buying their game after being called a pirate...... but....... I tried to tell them if it had been a normal sale or a combat piracy sale I might have bought several copies to gift...
oh well.....

They never called anyone a pirate.

I'm with ovoon on this one. I thought the ad was clever. They are calling out the pirates to finally pay for the game now that it is cheap. If you didn't pirate the game, you're not being called out. If you did pirate the game, then you shouldn't get all butt hurt that they called you out as a pirate. Besides, it's a great buy for everybody.
If you have not noticed the sinking ship is like the pirate bay's logo.

More than just a bit. :D

Yes... thats why I thought it was clever.

captfitz: what they should take away from the piracy rate is that they've priced the game too high. it's right up my alley but i'm never going to pay $20 for it.

More succinct than my reply. Basically: Yep!
"Everybody who downloaded our game illegally (for free) has now a chance to redeem himself"
I don't see that they accused anybody falsely. If that made you feel like being called a pirate, you probably should ask yourself - why? And no, neither will I claim anyone anything. :)
I'm with Ovoon on this one, too. Great art, great intended pun in it, great way of calling those out who try to justify their illegal doing. Personally I doubt that they'll get much pirates to actually pay for it, but neither do I see that they'll hurting themself with this move.
About being overpriced - dunno. I thought it was worth my 20 bucks after I finished it, but for 5 everybody who doesn't own it should at least check it out.
I don't see any tone and think you're all nuts. :P
I was holding off to buy the box version when I had some free cash but I'll definitely jump on this now.
to me, them saying here is your chance to redeem yourself 'buy it now' just seems as if they are calling me a pirate.
dunno, maybe i should not take it that way, however, it still has the potential to put off potential consumers.
And, that is clever as far as the pic, never been to the pirate bay,

Murdouken: I meant it was dumb that 90% of people playing the game pirated it and didn't buy it.

Oh - that makes sense. Sorry for misunderstanding.
Well I ended up buying it without pirating it first, its rather fun but there is one annoying part, the right click brings up the "about flash" menu. Its so instinctive to drop the item you have selected with right click that it gets frustrating to constantly bring up the context menu and have to click out again

Navagon: While this might work to some degree, I think it might also deter people who simply haven't bought it yet and don't like the 'pirate' implication.

Exactly why I'm not buying it. Looks good but don't hide a sale behind the piracy card.
I'm pretty sure you can play the piracy card if 90% of the versions out there are pirated. Looking at a 90% piracy rate is pretty depressing as a developer, especially since if you even mention it, people pull out the "priced too much", "they wouldn't have bought it anyway", and all of the other idiotic statements.
Funny thing is, their very own store front simply refuses to accept any of my credit cards. And I can't be the only one who is unable to purchase from them. So perhaps they should concentrate more on improving their payment handling services instead of appealing to an audience who has already moved on from this game.
Either way, my interest in Machinarium fizzled out last Christmas after the 10th attempt to buy it from them in their last sale. I'm no longer interested in it and can happily live without playing it.
The game should have been $5 to begin with. The vast influx of bargain-priced games (both indie and old games at reduced prices) has driven up expectations. For $20 I can get the likes of Mount&Blade: Warband, a game with multiplayer functionality and a thriving mod community, Depths of Peril, a Diablo-ish game with high replay value, or... a short adventure game I'd play once or twice. Riiiiight.
