How about the movie Gladiator...Commodus did not romance his sister as the movie demonstrated, but in real life was held in high esteem. And he did not die in the arena by Russell Crow, but was killed while in the bath by a wrestler to keep Commodus from taking office as consul.

monkeydelarge: It seems most historical movies are either extremely generous towards famous dead people or extremely cruel to famous dead people. For example, the movie Braveheart makes Robert The Bruce look like shit but in real life, he was more bad ass than William Wallace and never back stabbed anyone. The movie is extremely cruel to Robert The Bruce. The average person in this world, can't separate movies from real life so now because of this movie, most people think Robert The Bruce is a shit bag. This kind of BS, makes me never want to be famous because no matter what I do, after I'm dead, a movie can come out and totally destroy all that I was in the eyes of the world. All it takes is one movie(unless the movie really sucks).

Do you know any other movies that are either extremely generous towards famous dead people or extremely cruel to famous dead people?
That film was directed by and starred a fundamentalist, mentalist so what do you expect!

On the Aussie theme, A Beautiful Mind was out by quite a bit too:

BTW the whole "thumbs up/down" thing is a historical myth and it never really happened. Of course that isn't character related and requires a separate thread about movie accuracy. :D

I had forgotten about the "thumbs up/down" thing...another inaccuracy. :(

Grargar: How about Xerxes from 300?

monkeydelarge: 300 made the Persians look like an immoral decadent peoples but in real life, the Persians were not like this. And in real life, Spartans raped little boys and their society was okay with this. The movie also made Athenians look bad. In the movie, Leonidas called the Athenians "boy lovers" and this is not true. Athenians were mostly women lovers and not like the Spartans, who were mostly boy lovers. The Athenians were a lot more civilized than the Spartans. If I built a time machine, I'd be afraid to go to Ancient Sparta.
Minor Spoilers

Speaking of 300 I saw the new movie weeks ago AND IT FEATURED THE MORE EPIC SEX SCENE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! And when I say epic I meant litirally the music that goes with it was not soft romantic music it was action-pack epic drum sounding music. Still though the image of seeing Eva Green's bare nakecd breasts makes me feel uncomfertable. Seeing a famous actress naked just feels cringeworthy to me and I have seen her in Kingdom of Heaven and Casino Royale.

I thought the movie in the end was ok but the ending felt like it was leading up to a potential sequal.

Yeah, I liked the film so much that I wanted to know more about the guy, which is why I looked him up on Wikipedia in the first place - I was disappointed too!

Lionel212008: The way I see it, the greeks ruined history by refusing to be part of a rich, vibrant culture.
I wouldn't go that far. In my book, any big conquest culture is dick-ish. I argue enough with those who see napoleon or alexander as glorious civilizing heroes, I don't think i'll cut the prsians some slack either...

As for the OP, yeah, well, movies. If not super simplified and polarised into a big baddie and a noble hero, my brain implodes. It would be even worse than not-having-one-protagonist-to-identify-to-during-the-whole-movie. It's just bad writing by the gospel of holy popcorn's cashbox recipes handbook.
I totally forgot, The Doors.

Stone's depiction of Jim was a joke.
Just about any western dealing with real personalities:

Billy the Kid
Jesse James

The romanticized movie versions of these characters painted them as Robin Hood's, while the truth is a lot darker.

Yes, Jim Morrison's life was colorful enough to make a good movie, but Stone had his own ideas of what it should be and thus a false portrayal. Then "When You're Strange" a documentary of Morrison was screened at The Sundance Festival and also The London Film Festival, it was praised as being more accurate.
For a lot of examples of this kind of thing:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArtisticLicenseHistory?from=Main.YouFailHistoryForever
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HistoricalHeroUpgrade
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HistoricalVillainUpgrade

To add to this here, just about any movie dealing with Wyatt Earp (mostly in the opposite direction, but still), any motion picture depiction of the Robin Hood story with regards to Prince John. On a broader note, any depiction of Vikings by Hollywood is grossly inaccurate/unfair. Vlad the Impaler may have been a mean SoB, but what ruler facing constant invasion by an empire comparably un-nice isn't (just to clarify, I've nothing against Turks and generally like them) and he probably wasn't the undead prince of evil. Colonel (not general after attempting to join a South American revolution) Custer was a bit of a twit (especially near the end where he probably felt desperate for promotion back to general), but from newer depictions you would never guess he was a competent general in the Union army and played a pretty important role in the Battle of Gettysburg.
E.T.

The movie portrayed him a cute creature that loved reese's pieces and only wanted to get home. The truth is much darker, the things E.T. did to Elliot with that long, glowing finger will make anyone a little squeamish.
