"Because it's better than Windows Live! system" ROFL.

Just saw this on BBC NEWS24 Business news. Not actually read that story in The Grauniad, yet, but about to.

Okay, this sounds.....interesting :
Analysts suggested the service could be integrated into existing Microsoft products such as its Xbox 360 games console and Kinect gaming systems, or even into its flagship Office product to let users collaborate more effectively.

Wonderful! Time to find an alternative to Skype now. As if twitter buying Tweetdeck wasn't bad enough...
Whaat? Noooooooo.
Microsoft's online efforts have been staggering loss-makers over the past few years. Its online service division, which includes its Bing search engine, has lost $8bn over the past six years, and has not been profitable since the end of 2005.
So they're throwing obscene amount of money on a loss-making software on the hopes of.....not losing even more??

ROFL.
Reminds me of the time when Microsoft almost bought out Nintendo...
Farewell, Skype.
Time to switch to WengoPhone.
Maybe they won't mess it up and leave it alone...?

Just reading that makes me depressed. I kind of disagree though. If you hope for something realistic then you wont be dissapointed.

This is actually fairly logical if you look at Microsofts other large announcement this week. They have released Office365.

So what does this mean:
They now have a good hosted mail, intranet, IM and video conferencing solution for the SMB. The only thing missing is a hosted phone system.
With the ubiquity of Skype, POP's around the world this seems like it would be accepted pretty easily.

Another point of value is that as mentioned Skype has 8 million paying users. This is a great upsell opportunity for Microsoft: Get Corporate Email with that voiceline. Get Voice with your email. Hosted in the cloud - no more black box PBX, no more scary unintelligible phone bills.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is what Skype have been working on behind the scenes anyway. It is unlikely creating something from scratch will get them to market anywhere near as fast as this Skype purchase will.

Don't misunderstand what is going on here - this is about Office 365, this is about the SMB, this is about the 'all in' Cloud play.

Also, let's be serious: Live Messenger's video and audio quality is ages behind what Skype provides (especially when it comes to audio via its Silk technology).
I think this is very clever of Microsoft on the contrary. It is not so easy to switch to another software when you have a lot of contacts on Skype, because there is no inter-operability between Skype and other services. I use Skype with Linux too and I am worried that the already slow development process for Linux versions will be stopped by Microsoft.
Well I think they know what they are doing. I think almost every computer in this world is using Windows?

GameRager: If anything it'll speed up, but half the new updates will just be security fixes to fix security holes MS "accidentally" puts in the new versions.
I'm pretty sure that'd be their first non-Windows/Mac software since MSIE4 for HP/UX.
