Okay, I realize plenty of these types of threads have been started before, but I don't like the idea of posting in month-old topics (other forums I've been on don't like when people do that), so I'll start a new one. Please don't kill me. :)

Basically, I need a new monitor/TV. The one I use for my Xbox 360 pooped out on me, and the monitor I use for my computer doesn't have the appropriate plug-in slot thingies needed for the 147 plugs the 360 has (it doesn't really have that many, but it seems like it). So I need a monitor or TV that can accommodate all the plugs needed for an Xbox 360. I would prefer it not to be too expensive (bad economy and all that jazz) and with built-in speakers, but the latter isn't necessarily a must. It can't be too big, either. I think a 27 inch would be the max I could use. Also, it would be nice if I could use it for my computer, too, but like the speakers, that isn't a must.

I'm pretty terrible when it comes to computer- and console-related hardware, so I would really, really appreciate the help. Even some ideas on what exactly I should be looking for would be welcome.

is your xbox a pre-HDMI one? if it is yeah thats a pain if not just get a HDMI-DVI dongle... even if you do have a pre-HDMI console they do a VGA lead...
Wow this is a hard question because there's so many different elements to take into account.

First of all, I'd go with a pair of good external speakers anyway since built-in speakers are crap. My personal solution, was getting a monitor with both HDMI and an optical audio port. This way, I could attach HDMI to my screen and send the optical sound from the HDMI to my speakers (Logitech FTW) giving me brilliant sound even on my Xbox 360. With a push of the button, I could switch to my PC using DVI. This seemed like the best setup for me since I have two screens and can use one screen for watching TV or a movie, and the second for using my PC.

So if you go for, say, a 24" screen with two HDMI ports and an optical port + get decent speakers with optical sound, you can get a really cool setup. The alternative is getting a TV and having naff sound or paying a lot more for a home theater system.

Thanks for replying!

I just noticed that my 360 does have an HDMI plug. That'll help. I think I'll need a cord for it, though, because I don't have one. Also, how does sound work with HDMI? With the cords and stuff I'm using now, two of them are for sound. Do HDMI cables transmit sound? How does that all work?

EDIT: Oops. Just got kind of sorta ninja'd in my own thread. So HDMI cables can transmit sound, too?

As I said in the post above, HDMI sends image and sound - so if your screen has no speakers, you'll need to draw sound from the screen to speakers :) optical sound is the best for clarity IMHO. Or if you have an amplifier, you can stick it between your Xbox and screen and then your amplifier will handle the sound through HDMI. DVI is just audio, though, so while there exist HDMI to DVI plugs, sound will be lost.

I personally like Samsung monitors. I've had a couple and they've both been quite nice good colors, good viewing angle.

As for HDMI cables, don't waste a huge amount of money on them. I personally got a 3 pack for $15 a while back and they work quite well. RCA brand if you're interested. Just make sure that they're complient to the latest revision.
Yeah, HDMI cables are the biggest legal scam you can you find - my father paid $200 for two cables of each 3 feet long because the store owner said they gave better quality of sound and image which is utterly bullshit since they're digital signals.

The only difference is in throughput and revision type and in 99.5% of the cases, a cheap $3 HDMI cable will perform just as well as a $100 one. It's only when you use the very very latest hardware at extreme resolutions that it's said that you may see some blocky areas with fast moving images.
These are three that I'm keeping my eye on. Would they work for what I want?
