First of all, there might be SPOILER below. You have been warned :-)

Sometime last year, I got Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent from McGame.

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/1_free_game

To tell you the truth, gameplay takes quite a setback compared to the original, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory. However, that's not what I want to talk about here though. Instead I need help and am wondering if any fellow GOGers here are playing or have played this game and can help me.

I am on Mission 5 in Shanghai. I just finished recording the meeting, and entered the hotel (and grabbed that unfortunate guard to his death along the way). There are two possible ways (as far as I know) to go to the level above, which is by an elevator and by a ladder behind the laundry machines. In both ways, the game will autosave. I think this is a checkpoint. In both ways, my game crashes with an error message from Visual C++ runtime.

Something like:
"Assertion failed: Pos<=Size [File:..\Core\Inc\Core.h] [Line:1050]"
"This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact your application's Support Team for more information"

I googled the internet and it seems that I am not the only one, but no apparent fix for this. My specs are as follow:
Asus A46CM notebook
Intel® Core™ i5 3317U Processor
Windows 8 64-bit (DON'T ASK WHY! It comes pre-installed :-P )
Memory DDR3 4GB
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 635M 2GB

I have installed the latest patch (version 1.2) of the game.

I have tried to install:
- DirectX 9.0c
- Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 (x86)
- Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 (x64)
and updated the driver to the latest, and all do not make a difference, still the same crash with the same error message.

I wonder if anyone can help me with this, or at least provide a save game file after that checkpoint.

Thanks in advance.

My thoughts are that Double Agent is a splendid game and I have played quite a lot of Splinter Cell games already, but that's not what you're asking here. ;)

I've gone past the part you speak of and did not experience a crash at all. The first question for me is, did you update your copy to the latest version using the updater? You have to run the updater included with your McGame copy to patch it to the latest version (1.2 if I recall correctly). I'm not sure if this is cause for issues since I wasn't sure what version of the patch would be compatible with the game.

EDIT:
Found this online, might help?

It seems to be a possible data corruption with your installed game judging from what I'm seeing online.

I don't recall how checkpoints / auto-saving works in that game but you could take a look at gamefaqs and whatnot and download a profile with game completion achieved. I assume you can't start right in the middle of a mission but at least you could continue if you don't find anything else, albeit forfeiting the entire part of what you've left in your current mission.

The notebook I use to play the game has no internet connection, so I didn't use the updater, but I downloaded the patch (1.2) directly from Ubisoft. I assumed it works because I could play the game. Guess I'll try to find an internet connection and give it a try. Re-installing did not seem to help and most of the time my antivirus is not run anyway since the notebook has no internet connection.

True, save game files floating on the net seem to be mission-based only, not checkpoint-based. So I can just leave this mission and continue with mission 6, but I was hoping I could still finish this one.
Just one bump before I call it quit and skip to Mission 6.

I presume your drivers are up to date? It could be a Win8 incompatibility of sort...
Yes, my drivers are up to date.

I also tried it on my friend's machine running Windows 7. Same old crash at exactly same autosave.

I uploaded my save game file, prior to recording the meeting (that is the last place where saving the game does not crash):

just in case someone can help me record the meeting, enter the hotel, knock/kill the guards, and pass the autosave either in elevator or in ladder behind the laundry machine.

This seems like a bit of overkill, but... have you tried redownloading your installer?
Oh damn!
I wish i could help (i figured this was a technique / angle of attack problem - but i only played on PS2 and it has been some time at any rate) the problem you have I've not encountered as I didnt bother to rebuy for PC - i hope you find a solution though!
Didn't have an issue there, sorry.

McGame sadly does not keep the game in my account, it was only available for a limited time only.
