For those days when living a life bounded by the rules of mortals is just getting you down, GOG adds the phenomenal god game Populous 2: Trials of the Olympian Gods to the catalog for just $5.99

You are a demigod, child of Zeus and a mortal woman. Your destiny is to be become a god, to sit on the peak of Mount Olympus and be master of all you survey. You must fight your way through a massive pantheon of Greek deities to prove your worth to Zeus and assume your rightful place. It won’t be easy--a demigod has a lot to learn and many struggles ahead before learning everything there is to be a god, but you have your start. You have your first followers. And soon, soon you will rule them all.

Populous 2: Trials of the Olympian Gods improves on its predecessor in every aspect. This time your divine interventions are much more powerful, and you have a whopping 30 powers to choose from, niftily divided into 6 subcategories like earth, fire, wind, water, plants, and people. Of course it’s not like a simple demigod can spam his lightning bolts, one must fill up his manna meter through the worship of a growing number of believers. As in the first installment of the Populous franchise, your leaders can be transformed into heroes, transforming them into one of six legendary figures in the Greek mythology. There’s more mythic stuff in Populous 2: Trials of Olympian Gods: when one of two players controls 75% of the map, ancient Greek monsters are unleashed upon the map to wander around and destroy everything in their sight, ensuring a swift resolution between both sides. With over 1000 missions to beat for only $5.99, Populous 2: Trials of Olympian Gods is one helluva god game adventure meets real time strategy treat!

lugum: also because populous 1 and 2 arent that big of size compared to lol 1 and 2.
but then again they say size dont matter. well thats what i try convince my girlfriend atleast.
Yeah, but not only are LOL 1 and 2 very different size-wise, they're very different games. So it would have made more sense to sell them separately; if you bought LOL 2 then LOL 1 would still be worth buying. Whereas Populous 2 is the same as Populous 1 only bigger and better. Plus it's aged very well, and is still fun to play in 2011 whereas the original is much more clunky.

Anyway, again: This is a great game. Buy. Don't buy Populous 1. :-)

gyokzoli: I wish it had more bonus.
True, but you can't blame them - EA has probably buried their old games in their archives. No one digs in them anymore...
one of the best games ever made. this came out during the golden age of gaming when the amiga had a run of classic games being released

Technically... isn't Populous: The Begining the third in the series... this was an awesome game
I'm lovin' all the new releases, but a part of me is just itching to say -- we need more adventure games! I know you recently released LBA and LBA 2 (and I will definitely get LBA 2 from GOG once I finish my hard copy of the first) ... but there are some excellent catalogs out there, like Delphine's games (Flashback, Future Wars, Cruise for a Corpse, Operation Stealth). Thankfully, we already have Another World.

And as I'm sure many are thinking, it would be great if we could get LucasArts on board for old adventures and action games like Dark Forces, tough as I'm sure it would be. And obviously iD software's FPS and older shareware classics like Keen would be amazing. Yes, I'm just blurting out games I'd love on GOG, but why not? It's almost relevant to this news post... kind of...

well and broken sword 4 if you call that "adventure' and fahrenheit but our time will come ;)
Now this was an excellent game. I do think however, in light of their age, that Populous 1 and 2 ought to have been released together as a pack for $5.99. But it's still good that the games are finally available again.
Great! That would qualify as an instabuy if I wasn't completely broken. Wishlisted, will buy it very, very soon, I hope.

Epic release. Now I'm only waiting for Populous: The Beginning. :)
All I remember from Populous 2 was the silly intro. I don't even remember if I really tried to play it because of its predecessor.

As for Populous 1, I really tried to play and like it on Amiga because it was praised to high heaven at the time, but for some reason it just seemed kinda pointless. The same problem I had with e.g. Lemmings games which everyone was supposed to love. And the vague controls were also a bit off-putting.

Well, it is kind of pointless. It has Peter Molyneux written all over it -- there are some nice and very enjoyable mechanics, but they forgot to put in an actual game to go with them. It's more of a toy as it is; it's a lot of fun to play around with it, but I honestly doubt anyone ever beat all 1000 levels.

All in all, this is a great release. And I agree, it makes the first Populous completely redundant; this game could have been justifiably called Populous 2.0.
For some reason I though they only made one these.

Yeah, me 2! The best of all Populous! :)
Fingers crossed for Powermonger.
