If you like Science Fiction, look no further. You can't possibly go wrong with these two addictive Sci-Fi games, each with a cult following of its own.

First, there was [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/star_control_1_2]Star Control, a turn-based strategy game with an addictive real-time arcade combat mode called Mêlée. This was essentially a relatively close-quarters duel between two spaceships. The most impressive thing about this mode, and the game in general, was that, somehow, the game's creators managed to make the dozen or so race-specific ship types completely different from each other, yet at the same time balanced.

Star Control 2 added even more races and ships to the fray, while retaining balance in the Mêlée mode, but changed the underlying gameplay considerably. The sequel was turned into more of a space-faring adventure game, with quests, diplomacy and character progression in the form of ship upgrades. The gameplay is as addictive as ever and the storyline is both good and believable, with tons of memorable characters, races and humor that will make you go back to this game again and again.
One thing I never understood; what creature is that on the cover art of the game? I don't recall seeing it anywhere while playing, unless its a horribly mutated dnyarri or something, or umgah, but doesn't really fit.
Does Toys for Bob receive any money if we buy this? This would be the only motivation for me to buy this game, to thank them for the fun I've had. I've finished and enjoyed (a lot) The Ur-Quan Masters, and I'm not interested in the least in making Atari richer.

Ultrace: And that's why I'll be picking this up. I enjoyed the PC version of the game; I'm not interested in the Ur-Quan Masters; as an enhancement (of a different platform of the game, even), it's not the game I once played.

Wishbone: See my earlier post. It's exactly the same game, if you want it to be.
Yeah, I saw your post after mine. But is the 3DO version (or UQM) really the same? Does UQM have the option to play the PC music, for instance? I've seen some screenshots where you can choose "Remixes" but I'm not sure if the non-remixed music is what you would have heard on the PC. Music may not sound like a big deal, but it's one of those things that really sets the mood of the game I used to play. (Regardless of your answers, I'll support GOG here with a purchase, but I might check out UQM in addition.)

Never played this - vaguely remember gfx from box on some kind of advertisement. I’ll better put it on my wishlist.
First Alone in the Dark, today Star Control. Does it mean it’s now turn for some older (pre-1995) games? Really hope for so.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be an Umgah. That's the only alien race that would really fit. It's a far cry meaner looking, though. HAR HAR HAR!

As far as I know, you can choose between the original PC music (which is in .MOD format), the 3DO music (the exact same themes, but made as "real" music rather than modules, possible due to the 3DO version being on CD-ROM) or remixes (again, the same themes, but in new versions made by fans of the game).

As I also said in my post, that is what I recommend doing. I wasn't trying to dissuade you from buying the GOG release, I just didn't want you to discard UQM because of insufficient data. It is really an excellent piece of work, the focus of which is to bring the completely authentic Star Control II experience to players, regardless of platform, with additional options for those who wish to have them.
Just got this game, and I'm liking it so far.
(Haven't played it before)

But man its already pretty tough.

For some reason the ships move like molasses (I think it might be me need in to set up controls on that part), but the dialogue and the graphics are pretty good for a game in that period.

I died as soon as I left the milky way.
But on my second try I did go to pluto and got a nice conversation and a recruit.
(Fwiffo is so daaawwwww!)

Mined a few planets. Which I assume will come in handy later (trading and that I guess).

Will definately play it some more. :D

It's not the controls, your ship just moves and steers like a supertanker at first. Your first goal should definitely be to gather enough ressources to upgrade the thrusters and attitude jets to the maximum. Trust me, it'll feel much more comfortable after that.

Ah. I shall look into that.

(Oh old games! How I love how you force us gamers to find our own answers. Maybe I should have read the manual.....)
*goes to read the manual*

would love to know this as well.. already have the ur quan masters version as well.. but if buying it means some money goes to Paul or Fred from Toys For Bob then i'm game.
.. as you can tell by the avatar i am a huge fan of SC2.
I remember when I had my first taste of Star Control II with UQM 0.4.0 several years ago. (Must have been 2005 or 2006.)

Something about it left its mark on me to the point where it's now my personal greatest game of all time, despite lacking the nostalgia that a game like System Shock 2 would bring. (And speaking of which, it's saying something if it can top the likes of Magic Carpet 2, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex in my book...)

Perhaps it's the races. They each all have their charm, and the Ur-Quan were perhaps the only antagonists I felt even the slightest pity for out of any game I had played up 'til then. (You'll know when you learn their backstory...) It's also kind of funny, to the point where one of the more hilarious races is now my avatar of choice on forums that support animated .GIFs. (Thankfully, this is one of them...sans the animation, but at least it went through.)

I'm trying to find this out too. I'd insta-buy this if I knew the money was going to them. Otherwise, I already have the free and superior UQM which they donated for the good of mankind... I wonder if they have a paypal account for donations, I'd gladly just send them $6.
UR QUAN MASTERS! Today is the greatest....

Whats the good word on this...

NOTE: I posted this in another forum, but this might have been a better place...

The former premier gaming magazine Computer Gaming World did a 2-part tactics/hints guide for the original SC in issues 76 and 77. You can download the PDFs for those two issues of CGW at...

77 http://cgw.vintagegaming.org/galleries/index.php?year=1990&pub=2&id=77

Star Control 2 was reviewed in issue 104 here...

What a nice surprise! I still have Star Control 1 & 2 on original CD-ROM, along with their instruction manuals, but I never got them to run on any computers of mine post Windows 95, and even on Win95 was I never able to get the sound running correctly.

Star Control 1 is a captivating strategy space and arcade action game, but Star Control 2 took that gameplay and made an enthralling single player campaign story out of it.

I think so highly of these two games that I'm buying this now as opposed to my usual delaying until the games are featured in a promotional discount.
