I 2nd lighthouse: the dark being

If you haven't played that you're seriously missing out

i liked that game so much that I have the whole darn thing memorized unfortunately.

I wish I never played it before so I could enjoy it fresh :P

here are some other adventure games that I can think of off hand

.Drowned God (myst clone)
.Master of Dimensions (point and click) I really enjoyed this one
.Rex Nebulator and the Comic Gender Bender (point and click)
.Nancy the Happy Whore and the Perfidious Petrol Station (indie point and click) the game is really short but funny
.A tale of Two Kingdoms (Free indie point and click) designed to be like kings quest.. apparently it's a full length game :)
.Space Quest: Vohaul strikes back (fan made point and click) most people heard of the other space quest fan made games but not this one.. this one was hilarious and decently long for a fan made game.
.Down Under Dan (point and click) this one is hilariously crappy in a good way. most stereotypical Australian themed anything ever, but the game is extremely hard like those old school classics we're all fond of. Definitely worth playing.
SPOILER ALERT: don't worry about the mine maze there's a way to navigate it with ease
.Wrath of the Gods (point and click) A Greek mythology game. Don't be turned off by it's educational value. You'll get really into this one. It's also extremely difficult :) you may remember playing this as part of a school lesson if you grew up in the 90's. If so it'll bring back some serious nostalgia
.Ringworld 1 & 2 (sci fi point and click) it's pretty well known you may have never tried it. I highly recommend these two.
.Darkstar (FMV adventure) I've never gotten far in this one because it runs too slowly on my computer but it seemed pretty good so far. You definitely need at least like a shader model 3.0 computer with a few gigs of ram to play this one.
.The New Adventures of Zak McKracken (point and click) fan made sequel to the original.. not rating this too highly because they pretty much used all of the same scenes from the original.
.Scooby Doo Mysteries (SEGA genesis point and click) only on sega.. this one is surprisingly good.
.Zerozone (point and click) summed up in one word. meh. alright... nothing special.
.Gold Rush (classic sierra game) you probably played it, but it's lesser known among the sierra games.
.Touche: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer (point and click) fantastic game. Feels just like a monkey island game.
.3 Skulls of the Toltecs (point and click) not really rare but worth mentioning.
.Igor: Objective Uikokahonia (point and click) again, not really rare but might have not played this one yet.
.Innocent until caught
.Innocent until caught 2: presumed guilty (point and click) both great games.
.Universe (point and click) this one is really old school. Extremely hard. Not as long as I would like but very much worth playing.
.Synnergist (point and click) decent game. hard to get working if I remember correctly.
.Mission Critical (sci fi point and click) I loved this one. I really got immersed into the game.
.Beavis and Butthead: do u (point and click)
.Beavis and Butthead: virtual stupidity (point and click) the last one I listed was better yet lesser known I think.
.Piri: The Explorer Ship (1st person adventure) I haven't found it yet so I can't review it but it looks sort of like a myst clone.
.Willy Beamish (point and click) not particularly rare but also worth mentioning. This one tends to crash at one point in the game.
.Mystery of the Druids (1st person point and click)
.Titanic: Adventure Out of Time (1st person point and click) this one is very interesting. a bit too much dialogue but it's still very much worth playing.
.The Feeble Files (point and click)
.Future Wars (point and click) definitely a good game although I wouldn't call it rare.
.The Fish Files (point and click) it's for gameboy color if I remember correctly. Possibly in other formats as well.
.Lightbringer: adventure on mars AKA next giant leap for mankind AKA Cydonia (myst clone) absolutely fantastic game. Can't recommend it enough. It is quite hard though.

You need to run these in windows 95 in virtual pc
.Physicus (educational myst clone)
.Chemicus (educational myst clone)
.Bioscopia (educational myst clone) these 3 are annoyingly hard. May or may not be for you.
.Biosis (myst clone/simulation game) by simulation I mean that you have to take care of your character. this is mostly controlling the environment of the game to make sure your character stays alive. It's kind of annoying and doesn't allow you to enjoy the pace adventure games are supposed to be played at, but the puzzles seem hard and I might even finally try to beat this one this weekend.

that's just the tip of the iceberg. there are thousands of adventure games out there. Keep looking ;)

Nightlong
union city conspiracy?

yea i played that

fantastic game :)
They weren't obscure at the time, but I haven't seen anyone mention Apprentice or Apprentice II recently (both free). Really well made, although the first is really short.

Not sure if "I Have No Mouth..." or A Tale of Two Kingdoms qualify either, but if so I'd give them hearty recommendations.

Someone mentioned Colonel's Bequest and its sequel, outside a small handful I'd put those up there with any of the other Sierra games. Colonel's Bequest in particular is pretty different than most Sierra games at that time- all you have to do to "win" is survive until morning and figuring out who the murderer is isn't very difficult. The challenge is all in the details of the game, figuring out as much as you can about everything. Pretty fun. Another Sierra classic is Gold Rush.

A few more "not obscure but not mentioned enough games"- Star Trek 25th Anniversary, Star Trek Judgment Rites, and The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes. All great games somewhat overshadowed by newer titles.
Oh yea star trek 25th anniversary and judgment rites were by far the best star trek games ever made
can't believe i forgot about those

They have a lot of replay value as well
DreamWeb

A weird and dark point and click adventure with a rather unique top-down perspective (similar to the one in Hotline Miami). It has a lot of problems and the story and design kind of fall apart in the second half, but it is a very unique experience. The story is rather depressing and leaves a lot of ambiguity as to whether anything in it is actually taking place in reality or just the delusions of a complete psychopath.

Anyone interested in the game should also read the "Diary of a Mad(?) Man", a sort of prelude to the game that comes with the manual. It's acutally a pretty disturbing read and some of the information within is necessary to solve some of the puzzles.
May this thread never die...still so many great adventure games to be rescued from the clutches of obscurity and murky ownership rights.

I'd love to see the Legend Entertainment games arrive some day.
No-one called NECRO on this one yet?

*NECRO*!!!!!1!1!!

I'd like to say that I gave Teen Agent a go and I liked it, it was fine, not LucasArts standard but liked it better than most things Sierra have done, doesn't deserve any flak IMO

DragonSphere was OK, not as good, something a bit twee and old fashioned about it - seems like its from the 50s or something, but fine, actually pretty good in parts

Oh also played this free thing called PISS that was very good, about a mercenary chick with amnesia, ended just as it was getting interesting but very enjoyable

Wow, doesn't anyone know Lost in Time? (neither GOG?)
It was a nice point&click adventure with interactive-movie sections. I think that the story was good too.
I quite liked the mansion part for both puzzles and graphic. The 3d rendered images or drawn parts, instead, were a bit average, expecially at the end.
7.5/10

Another minor older adventure was Ween the Prophecy.
The first time I saw it as a kid it was super cool.
After replaying it years later, it was just ok ;)
6.8/10?

Ah, I also remember Legend of Djel, even if I could never finish it for its difficulty. (5-6/10?)

EDIT: wtf, I thought at these randomly and all three are from Cocket Vision O_o

Ah, Death Gate! (come on GOG!)
Cool world, wonderful midi music, nice story and graphic.
End boss was a bit out of place, but acceptable.
8/10 for this!

I played lost in time
it was alright

yea like you said the 3d parts were kind of lacking

yea ween is well known. I never liked that one that much either

never played Legend of Djel. haven't found that one yet
it looks okay.
I've heard of this one:

Astronomica : Quest for The Edge Of The Universe

I never got my hands on it though

It's supposed to be a myst clone but I can't find much info on it to be able to tell

I'm adding more games to my original post over the day as I think of them so you folks might want to keep your eye on it ;)

Skyborg

Could be total crap though

It looks like it's hard to find anyways

and another one I just read about that looks really rare
(can only find a handful of screenshots)

Opsys

and the rarest of all

space quest 7

because it doesn't exist :P
I know you all want to hit me for mentioning that
but at least I didn't try to list a hidden object game as an adventure game
or mention monkey kombat
oops i just did :P

tempestmichael: the silver lining (made by roberta williams who did kings quest) it looks really cheesy to me actually.
Actually that's a fan-made King's Quest game by the same people who went on to make Cognition. Having played a part of both those games (someone here was kind enough to gift me episode I of Cognition, TSL is free), I'd say their "dramatic flair" works better with their original creation than it does trying to force soap opera-ish drama into the King's Quest universe.

TSL definitely has its high points (as does Cognition), but its definitely cheesy in an angsty way.

Speaking of lesser known fangames, Space Quest 0 and Space Quest The Lost Chapter are a couple old text-interface Space Quest fangames that are worth the time of SQ fans.
