Hello everyone,
I have subscribed to GOG a few days ago, so I'm kind of a newbie :p I already bought Fallout, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D, Sanitarium (never heard of this game but it looks awesome) Messiah and Earthworm Jim 3D. They all work perfectly... err, except for the last two : the music are all choppy and it ruins everything :( Some things I noticed :
> musics are choppy when I don't/can't move my character (during in-game movies for exemple) but when I start moving, the problem stops (and if I stop moving, same problem)
> when I open the task manager during the game (by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL) I go back to the desktop and I can still hear the music, but it sounds perfect here. When I go back to the game, musics are still choppy...
> and now, I think it might be the reason why there's a problem : both games have a "Music" folder and all the files are .ogg files... I downloaded libvorbis.dll and put it in my c:/windows/system32 folder but it doesn't change anything... I downloaded a player that can read .ogg files (Winamp) but nothing as well, in-game music is still choppy... I tried to lower the hardware acceleration for the sound (thanks to Ralackk who quicky answered me on the Messiah forum) but same thing...
So, any ideas ? Did anyone encountered the same problem ? I am using Windows XP... If anyone can help me, I'd be very thankful :)

Navagon: Off the same page you linked to: Supports up to 3.0GB DDR200/266/333 SDRAM.

You're right.
In the Features of VIA P4X400 table it shows 16 GB as the max, but further down in the Key Features list it shows 3 GB as you mentioned. I must be overlooking something.
Either way, 3 GB sounds much more realistic on that older board.

Stuff: I agree, it's easy to forget driver updates. I went almost a year once without updating my video card drivers . . . =D

Navagon: I don't know if it makes as much difference as it used to. But it's still something I like to keep on top of.

I have an older laptop where upgrading the sound drivers made a very big difference. The sound was stuttering when playing Dawn of War and after upgrading it went away. I had tried about everything else I could think of, simply due to the fact that other games played ok.

Ok, well thanks to everybody for helping, I'll see what I can do :) It doesn't look so hard, but I just hope it will fix the problem !
Thanks again for your attention !
Oh yeah, just asking : errr... how long does it take for the GOG support team to reply ?

At the moment it seems to be taking a while longer than usual. That said you can't expect a response over the weekend even at the best of times.

It really can sometimes. Especially if the update is for a new OS or product range.

Hm... I have just upgraded my RAM (1,50 GO now) but bad news : it didn't do anything. It really pisses me off because I have the feeling I bought this thing for nothing (let's hope it will improve the performances in some way). Well, I guess I'll have to wait for a response from the support team... If they still care about their customers -.-

Considering the requests they keep getting, I don't think caring is much of an issue. Your problem here is your PC, not the game itself. At least for Messiah I can tell you that it works just fine on two different computers I tried it on. So in light of this, it's unfair to throw a problem at the supports feet and demand that they fix your problem, when it can be from a dozen different reasons. Have you tried replacing your sound card, your motherboard, drivers, and so forth? That's the best and only real advice they can give you, and it's not for lack of trying. Also, it seems they are understaffed right now, or have problems with their support system, or are flooded by support requests, and so it takes quite long to reply. Don't have your hopes up if they do, though.

Okay a few things:
- the RAM is definitely recognised in control panel - system?
- your old dead sound card; what happened about it? Was it a PCI card you removed? Or was it on board? If so is it definitely disabled in, or absent from, the device manager (control panel)?
- you have definitely upgraded your sound and graphic drivers along with Direct X 9c?
But yes, even if it's not going to sort this particular issue it will still improve system performance. You should be able to crank game settings up a bit more now.

Not so different with humans. We live to a ripe old age, if we don't get any viruses, or meet angry fists when we do something wrong, or get a permanent system failure, and similar things. Then, when we...outlive our usefulness, we get scavenged for parts to put into our a bit more young, but failing counterparts. Or get dumped into a hole and replaced with a fresh new one.

- Yep, it shows "1,50 Go" now instead of 512 Mo.
- I think the old one is a PCI card (I verified on the net what was exactly a PCI card because I wasn't sure) but it is still in my computer. I tried to disable it, first it didn't work and when I tried a second time my computer crashed and for a moment I couldn't turn it on whatsoever ! But after rebooting several times it works again now (just to clarify things : I write messages with my laptop). What do you exactly mean by "was it on board" ? Do you mean that it was included with the machine by the time we bought it ? If that's the case, it was.
- All drivers have been updated as far as I know. I checked DirectX and it has been updated to the last version.
@ Titanium : hm, ok, maybe my reaction was a bit selfish... It is just that I am disappointed that it didn't work. I paid for this stuff but it didn't solve the problem and to be honest I don't see any improvement in my computer's performances yet (I tried to install a more recent game on it but it didn't work better than when I only had 512 Mo). I am also aware that the problem concerns my machine, as I tried to install the game on a friend's computer and the sound worked well. I don't absolutely want the support team to solve my problem, I just hope so : I added a Dxdiag file to my message in order to provide them with more information about my machine and in order to (perhaps) help them to deal with my problem. I also precisely discribed the issues I encountered. It wasn't just a dumb message like "my game doesn't work, what can you do ?". I understand they want to ignore such messages (and I hope they don't receive any of that kind) but I thought that sending a precise, well-written message would encourage them to answer more rapidly (even if it is to say that they can't solve the problem). In fact, it is the lack of information about what is going on that bugs me the most : why not making an official announcement saying that the support team can't deal with most of the requests at the moment ? It would please many customers who are in the same situation ! As I read in another thread, the current situation is a bit like "we've got your money, now fuck off" (quotation from another user) and even though I'm convinced that this is not the way people at GOG think, one can sometimes feel it this way. I will just add that I'm not just standing there arms folded neither : I have tried several things to solve the problem, like pluging my USB card in its own USB outlet rather than in the USB adaptator I use (where my mouse and gamepad are already pluged in). I was convinced it would fix it, but it didn't.
Sorry for the long message, I just wanted to clarify things ^^' I also hope that my ideas are clear (I guess I still have progress to make in English)
EDIT : I don't know how my first message has been posted a second time at the top of this page :-/ Anyway, I wanted to know if there is any way to launch GOG games in windowed mode ?

Willdo: ....

Okay, so firstly I recommend you physically remove the old, dead sound card. That really doesn't seem to be something you want to keep in there. It's clearly causing you some issues even if it's not causing the sound distortion.
It's not something that's too difficult to do. So don't worry. You may have to remove the screw on the inside of the case (see attached). You may also need to remove any cables connected to it such as one coming down from the CD/DVD drive. Then you should be able to pull the card right out.
While you're in there, you may want to consider installing another sound card. Having an external sound card shouldn't be too problematic but it's certainly not going to decrease distortion. You can get new ones cheap. But maybe a decent refurbished card would be your best bet so as to save money and hopefully give sound quality a needed boost.
But then, first, I'd just try running the same games again without the dead card in there. See if that simple change makes a difference before spending any more money.

Ok, I'll do this... later, by now my head is about to explode : trying to fix that damn issue and trying to express myself in correct english at the same time, that's a good exercise ! But I'm starting to believe I should just get a whole new computer, mine seems to have entered the "ol' piece o' junk" state. I mean, every time I turn the thing on, it shows me that today is "January 1st 2003, 0:00" !
When I think about the fact that Messiah and Earthworm Jim 3D are two games I bought a second time because they didn't work well before, I must be cursed or something :)
