I think the live action movie actually addressed this, didn't it?

I have no idea, I've never seen it. I've never been fond of Mario, so I never had the urge to watch the movie.

This theory was confirmed in the BLOCKBUSTER HIT Mario movie from Hollywood pictures. It really clarifies a lot of lore about the Mario brothers, including that luigi does'nt have a mustache and is hispanic, and that Mario does'nt date princess peach, he dates a 55 years old woman that dresses like she is a 21 years old girl in a college party.

That is correct, Nintendo has stated that officially before.
It's strange, but they probably decided not to retcon the old titles or something.

I think I have seen that, was that where that guy had a Ms Pac-man machine in his garage but wasn't allowed to use it to set a high score (at the group run by that bearded champion of several arcade games)?
That was an interesting movie.

Actually, Shigeru Miyamoto himself has stated that Mario and Luigi have no last name.
