I don't know if this will work here or not, but I had an idea. It would need some fleshing out, but on the other hand, if we could get it to work it could be amazing.

A few years back there was a site on the web called 'One Red Paperclip,' where the guy was trying to trade up from a single red paperclip up to a house. Does anyone think a similar concept could work here?

The general operation would be that someone offers something to give away, and each person who accepts something has to then offer an object of equal or greater value for free to the next person, who then and so on and so forth.

Example: the first person (probably me) could start by giving away a free game from GoG to the first person to claim it. Once they have received their item (but not until they have received it) they have twenty-four hours to offer an item of equal or greater value, and the "gifts" continue from there. Things wouldn't be limited to GoG's, though, at least not the way I see it. Got a dirt bike you wanna get rid of? Offer it for free after claiming someone else's item, on the promise that rather than the recipient giving something to you in return, they offer something even greater up next.

Absolute monetary value is less important here than intrinsic (right word?) value, so something that is just a lot of fun (like a free LAN party, or wedding singer services and so forth) are equally valid offers for trade.

As an aside, we could even do something along the lines of the thread resetting at the end of each month, so that whoever receives the last big item offered in a month can start back with a significantly lower priced item of their own if they choose.

So, do people think something like this could work?

That guy had a lot of chutzpah to do that. I'm always a bit surprised that people don't recognize that he essentially tricked a large number of people into giving him a house for free.
Someone could just accept a gift from someone and not offer an item of equal or greater value. Instead, that someone offers an item of lesser value or just nothing. Some people are like that in this world...

Still, the concept itself was interesting, and I feel that, from what I've seen, the GoG community is possibly one of the few places where such a thing could work with none of those involved feeling like they were cheated.

People here are awesome, and almost mind-bendingly generous. This just seems like a good way to justify that generosity and spread in a bit more interesting way :P

I sort of agree with you. Most of the people here are awesome and almost mind-bendingly generous but there will always be a few who will try to take advantage of such communities.

Again, hence why I thought to put this here and not at some of the other far more dickish forums I've seen around. People here GIVE EACH OTHER GAMES all the time -- this just seems like an extension of that.

On the other hand, you could see it as the person offering the object for trade already having received payment for it.

Isn't it common sense that if one has enough power, he does NOT need an alibi of any kind, since people will be too afraid to question any of his actions ? And if the attempt to take over the world FAILED, no alibi could save the poor bastard either ;P.
