Now from time to time, practically everyone gets emails or website popups trying to phish your details for some sort of gain.

Today was no different, another day, another attempt to get my bank details, however this one made me laugh immediately... why you may ask? Well as all you net savvy peeps would know, the "from" field in emails will tell you where/who an email comes from, it's pretty much the best indication in most cases as to the senders' legitimacy, so if it were to be from a bank or some such, it'd reflect that in the email address and name shown.

However some people who make phishing mailers etc, really... really shouldn't if they can't even setup their auto mailer correctly to show something even vaguely legitimate.

This is the copy paste from my most recent mail from some idiot trying to phish my bank details:

From: "localhost"@210.150.140.59
To: [my email was here obviously]
Subject: Lloyds Account on hold!
Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2011 11:18:32 -0800

Notice the rather obvious cockup there? As a coder/website designer, to see this really made me chuckle quite heartily at the absolute phail.

So, anyone else have any good stories to share about phishing scam phails?

I got some from ebay and paypal awhile back that were pretty well done, until I remembered I had no account there. Recently, I've been getting "shipping notfications" from packages that I never ordered, with a zipped attachment. Nothing fishy there, not at all.

I get a UPS email every day in my spam box
My experience is when i was visiting my mother and she actually recieved a phone call from a "microsoft technician" telling her that they've been monitoring her computer and have found that was infected with a virus but then told her it was ' it ok. we fix it.' all she had to do was turn her computer on and go to their website blahdeblah\notalegitimatewebsite\blahblah.com and provide her microsoft genuine activation key and then download their removal tool.

LOL

Edit: I forgot to mention that as it turned out this "microsoft technician" was going down the phone book calling people and just happened to call all our relatives in the area with the same surname. We all still laugh about it at christmas time.

I'm pretty sure I'm the new prince of Nigeria because the old one died and all I had to do was send 500 dollars so they could send me my 50,000 dollars and crown.

The thing is I teach people basic computing (old folks) and thats one of the first things we talk about when we start an Internet and email course, People who dont know any better WILL get caught out by these things. Education on the internet is hugely important, especcially for older people who are unsure in the first place (hence why I teach a 12 week course to go over basics and give them my email address so if they are unsure they can contact me and get a second oppinion)

Only $50 000. Last one I had was $11.3 million. with which I could buy the country, no upfront amount asked for just my bank account details

Possibility that might be the IP of a zombie the crook is accessing?

Or an intentional 'accident' to create contempt for that IP?

They must like you better :(
I get FedEx and Paypal ones from time to time. Loads of "lottery winning!" emails though. I should be rich by now! :P
I get this odd "Dutch Lottery" one every few months.
I used to get hundreds from the "Fun Detective" I'm not really sure, but I think they might be serial killers.

@reaver894 Its great to hear they teach that stuff to our older folks. They should start teaching that in high schools too. Never can have too much internet safety awareness.
