I haven't seen this newly added game from GoG Wing Commander Privateer, but I wonder is there a connection of this game with another oldie also named Privateer with Christopher Walken, or they are two completely different games?

Plus why does it carry the name of Wing Commander? It's scenario is a prequel to Wing Commander 3 + 4 ?
Please note I've only played WC 3+4.

Yeah, Walken was in Privateer 2. Had a lot of video cutscenes in the plot. It is a completely separate game and not just a large expansion of the original worthy of a "2".

The Wing Commander wiki shows that the series got some pretty substantial names to provide voiceover or cutscene work.

I think it uses the WC name because it was built pretty much from the foundation of WC, combat is quite similar, same or similar universe, etc.

Privateer is in the Wing Commander universe. It's a Wing Commander game.

It is the prequel to Privateer 2, the game with Christopher Walken. Privateer takes place during the Kilrathi War of the first 3 WC games.
Side note: The "Wing Commander Academy" animated series retained the voice cast used in the titular game.
