I noticed that my GOG copy of "Don't Starve" has a serial key below it - is that for activating on Steam as well?

GOG never gives steam codes, you should know that. it is for updating the game.

Tried it and it didn't work

Also Witcher and Witcher 2 provide Steam serials as well.

it is the other way around - you can redeem the Steam versions on gOg, not the gOg versions on Steam.

I thought the serial key was for online multiplayer and that's why few games in the GOG catalog have one.

It's an April Fools joke. GOG has been giving away U.S. Missile Launch Codes to members with all of their purchases for the past 24 hours and waiting to see if anyone figures it out.

The Don't Starve serial number is for the automatic updater. It's entirely optional, and I always had problems with it. You can just download the updates manually when they're posted on your shelf.
