DreadMoth: I have a few old Kodak CDs with game back-ups burned in 1998 -1999. They still work perfectly.
Sure, I too have Kodak & Verbatim disks burned with my very first CR-R that still work perfectly. As a matter of fact, all of those I kept still do. Yet I burned a few TDK DVD-R a year ago and two of them are already causing trouble ( and yes, I checked them after burning ).

That's I 'd guess, the dark side of the sustained trade balance surplus growth of the PRC...

haydenaurion: What brand of external HDD would you recommend? (posting this again because I think I messed up the reply lol.)
That's kind of a tough question. You often times don't know what sort of a disk they're using inside the case. And sometimes they include proprietary bits which require special software or use a portion of the disk for the tools. I'd definitely go around looking at reviews, but for backups, you want to make sure that the drive has a good interface. USB2 or firefwire 400 isn't going to cut it on any drive over 1tb, and probably over 500gb it's going to be too sluggish for you to be happy with.

If you've got the option, I'd go with eSATA or USB3.

The drive I'm currently using seems to be pretty good, it's a Fantom Drives Green Drive, and 2 tb size. I think it's nice to have both eSATA and USB2 just in case you need to pull some files off.

saldite: If you're still looking for Taiyo Yuden, I bought some a 100 pack about a year and a half ago from Rima. I don't know how reliable the service is now, but everything went just fine when I bought from there. My disks were completely legit. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.
Did the discs you bought have any of the following Hub Stamper Codes on the bottom of the disc (burn side) in the center? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiyo_Yuden#Recording_media

Unfortunately, my PC isn't that great and doesn't have those type of ports and upgrading is out of the question as I think I would have to upgrade the power supply and motherboard. I kinda just got something quick at the time without really knowing too much about PCs, but I plan on just getting a better one later on. I'm kind of newbie when it comes to hardware LOL.

I want to say "Yes," but I honestly cannot remember off the top of my head how I identified them other than that they were legit. I, unfortunately, left all of my disks back at my parents' house (I'm currently up at college and had no use for them here) and I have none that I burned with me either, so I cannot check for you, as well. I'm sorry.

That's alright. I'm considering buying them anyways and hoping they're not fakes. Thanks anyways.
