I haven't played Rage...yet. But I will say, this is a similar experience I had with BulletStorm. I kinda feared this ahead of time though, and bought it on sale, as he graphics looked deceent, and I am always up for trying a new shooter. It started out okay...dialogue was a bit needlessly over the top with the profanity, but whatever, I was okay with that. Story seemed to be okay as it began. But as I continued to play, it was just too linear, and really very little too keep me interested. Even with the introduction of some neat new weapons, and abilitiy to use interesting skillshots, ultimately, I just found it boring the crap outta me rather quickly. I just find myself needing a lot more than just some rather senseless, mindless shooting to keep me happy and interested these days. Maybe playing games like Fallout 3, XCom: EU and the like, are just ruining these types of games for me now, lol. I still enjoy firing up Doom 3 and the ROE expansion pack now and then though....just something special about it, what can I say?
jefequeso: It's Id. So.... I expect the gunplay is satisfying?
Fenixp: Yep, gunplay is by far the best bit of this game: And not only gunplay, reactions of your opponents are utterly fantastic as well. Enemies react to their surrondings when they die, sometimes they just fall over a table, sometimes they crawl on the floor for a bit before expiring, when you kill an enemy while he's running, momentum alone is keeping him up for a few seconds until he collapses to the ground. And that's just an example - I've never seen such an amazing iteraction of dying opponents and their surroundings + current situation.
That's not all, tho: Enemies are pretty varied, it's important who you're fighting and they're acting in accordance to their 'lore' - there are disciplined and highly organized enemies, utterly chaotic ones, and every ground requires slightly different strategy.
Then there are the racing bits, which are fun, altho nothing special - you can skip most of them if you so desire.
All in all, Rage is definitely way above average.
Ahh good to know, will definitely be giving it try sometime in the future :)
