I had a bit of trouble with some of the games by a company called Spiderweb Software. The games are great and have excellent stories but somewhere along the line, I get stuck and can't go any further due to the tactics and difficulty ramping up. The difficulty is extremely tough.

I am making this topic as I want to know if any of the other games like Avernum 5 and 6 are worth it or should I just stick with the game Im finishing now-(Avadon 1).

I just finished Avadon and found it mildly hard but fun and didn't have any real problems. Im thinking that its either Avernum 5 or 6, or go straight to the Avernum 1 rerelease.

Has anyone played Avernum 5-6? I want to know if its as unforgiving as the Geneforge series. If not than ill try Avernum 5.

The older Jeff's games are the easier it is to get yourself into an unwinnable game. Stick with his newer games if you haven't played through them all yet.

Yeah, that sounds like good advice. Ive been up and out of Geneforge series and what a disaster that was. I think a lot of the reason all the other games suck so much is because the average joe can't get past a 1/4 of the game. Its such a shame because whenever I get bored and figure I didn't try one of the games, I stop and remember how frustrating playing them is :(

Pretty sure Avadon or whatever the newer one is called is the friendlier one as far as that stuff goes. I found it amazingly boring though.
Honestly don't even bother with Avernum. I wanted to like them, I really did. The games turn into a slog with way too many trash mobs that aren't difficult, but are tedious as hell.

Also you found Geneforge the most unforgiving? That was the one series I liked by him because the filler combat wasn't that bad and the summon mechanics made it pretty easy, but fun, with a little toying around.
Why not Avernum: Escape From the Pit? I haven't played it myself (I did play Avadon) but it looks like the good storyline of Avernum with the "modernity" of Avadon's gameplay. Best of both worlds, apparently.
I know this might be obvious but have you tried turning the games to easy in the options, I find it really helps and beat a few of the Geneforge games on easy and had some challenge but was quite winnable even though my gaming skills are kinda poor.

Im sorry but Im so frustrated with Geneforge right now. I just had to quit the 4th gene forge because my agent couldn't get past a certain part of the game. The games are ridiculously unforgiving and this is the 4th game in that series Ive had to quit, making that my 8th time I had to rage quit a game in that series. I really don't understand why people like that shit. I mean sure the stories good, but the games too fucking hard.

Jeff vogel really dropped the ball on that series. He should just drop everything he's doing and remake that whole fucking series so its at least playable on 1 of the difficulties.

That Avernum's good and Im going to play that tonight but the ones from the 2nd and 1st original trilogy are terrible.

Have you considered looking up a guide to see the optimal setup? If the games are that hard for you then there is nothing wrong with loosely following a build that someone else has used.
From your reply I can only assume that you went into an area that is too high of a level for you or just did a build that doesn't work.

Na, It started with gene forge 3. Thats where problems started. I was playing a guardian and someone on this fucking forum told me to keep creations around instead of disposable creations. I was doing fine and got 3 extra levels for me and my creation, but then it came on when I had to do the infested paths on island 2. Ive restarted that particular game 2 times and I don't know what Im doing wrong. It seems that what the problem is is that the acidic thadhs should only be fought up close with a guardian that has close to max acid/poison resistance. What a load of shit that is.

The gene forge games suck and jeff vogel should have made them with the new system that avadon and avernum remake had. You start to notice why no one goes on the gene forge forums on gog, lol.
I haven't played Geneforge or Avernum yet but Avadon was great fun, a very big surpise and it was a lot longer than I anticipated. FYI, Avadon 2 is in development.

I would also recommend the Eschalon: Book 1 and 2 too. The 3rd is in development as well.
For the record, Jeff is aware how front-end loaded the character development is in his earlier games. That is to say, the choices you make at character creation and the first few levels can ultimately make or break your character WAY down the line, and at the point you're making the decisions, you probably don't understand the game that well yet. This is true for a lot of RPGs, some more than others, but Avernum is one of the worst in that regard. He's got a very interesting blog post about it. Basically him changing around his design is one of the reasons Avadon isn't nearly as irritating for newbies as his other games.

People are going to lynch me for this but you only need The Books of Eschalon 1 & 2 - The two games offer a much cleaner and precise version of what SpiderWeb kept repeating in its umpteen releases of practically the same game.

And if you want to go one better than Eschalon - Utlima VII & VIII (IX was more like Zelda Ocarina of Time and the games before VII where an eye sore. =P ).

I hate the Eschalon games, they really managed to put me off as early as character creation screen, At least Spiderweb's games let you choose gender and don't give a patronize message for trying.

Though Ultima 7 is a good suggestion though combat is boring, Ultima 8 is not worth it, it's not really that good of a game and it feels rushed. Ultima 9 isn't very good either and really killed the series.
Use Cheat Engine and make your characters invincible.
