So then...it actually happened today to me

While I was playing Vanquish today on my PS3, the system just suddenly froze, went blank and the signal for the system was lost, the system then at the indicator light started blinking RED and does so whenever you try to start up the system

Due to this I am unable to take out the game from the system, so I start up the system, it lights up green for a second then it starts blinking red and that's it

The system that I have is a FAT 60GB Backwards compatible one, it has been working without any problems whatsoever from 2007 when I got it

So my questions are: What might have caused this? I checked online and apparently it can be caused due to overheating since this is a Red light, and not a yellow one

And: What exactly can I do to fix this? Is there anything I can try on my own at home or am I pretty much screwed here?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks people
PS3 RRoD?

First once u turn on the console from standby the front should have a solid green light. (take all discs out). If the light keeps blinking and u cant get 2 your main menu ( the one with options like games movies etc.) Then that indicates that your system is experiencing a hardware failure. Turn the console off by holding the front for 10 seconnds. once the console is on standy by turn it off from the back. Disconnect all cords from the ps3. On the end with stickers there should be a little rectangle box to open and get your hard drive ( read the manual and remove the HDD). Once the Hdd is out reconnect all wires. turn the ps3 back on manualy and hold the on button(in front) until u here 2 beeps. If u still cant see your dashboard or menu then the ps3 console it self has a system failure. if u can see the dashboard then the hdd has a failure in it. If it is the hdd just replace it with a computer(laptop hdd) hdd. if it is the system then you got to get it fixed.

P.S Edited to remove irrellevant info. If you want the main info, get it on the site linked. Hope this helps.

Never heard of an RRoD on a PS3. I've heard of the YLOD, ofc, but not a red light. I've so far managed to avoid RRoDs on my consoles thus far, but my 360's disc drive went out last year. I've still got it, but I simply waited until Black Friday for the 360S deals and bought one of those for $300.

Idk, man, but you'll definitely want to have it checked out. We've got a Microsoft certified repairer here in town, so we don't have to ship our boxes out. I'd recommend looking around your town locally for the same thing.
If you're out of warranty (and you are, since you have a really old PS3) you might as well open it up and solder/clamp down whatever you're supposed to to fix it. This happened to my buddy and Sony wanted the price of a PS3 Slim to fix it for him, so he just bought a Slim. You might as well call and ask first, but they're unlikely to be willing to help for a reasonable amount of money.

There's people on the net that repaired their XBox 360 RROD (because they had modded 360s and couldn't ship it back to MS) so I imagine you can find someone who has some ideas for this. The nice thing is you lose nothing by trying and failing, since you can get clamps and the like for 5 USD or less.
Alright so I already tried to remove the HDD from the system and turn it on, i'm getting the same result

So in this case I am assuming that this is a hardware issue, I just wrote a long letter to customer support (Since there is no Irish callcentre number) I'll see what they have to say on this matter

If nothing can be done I'll just try to open the system to clean it and see if I can do anything

I'll take it to a repair shop if I'll be out of options
i have an old nes thats about 25 years old, a vectrex thats about 30 years old , an old ps1,
amiga 600 they all still work perfect. while the latest generation consoles break after a few years? thats just crap.
Alright so today I spent some time and finally opened the PS3

After cleaning it from the inside thoroughly, making sure that nothing is broken and readjusting the cooling agent of the processor to make sure that it's connecting....

It still does not work, so far I think I've tried everything and from what I see: This is an issues with the hardware itself and there's nothing I can do from my end

Sigh...oh well, time to finally upgrade to a Slim I guess, anyone interested in buying a broken PS3 for cheap in Dublin?
