GOG has done a wonderful job of bringing back old computer games that were previously either impossible to find, or ridiculously expensive considering their age. But I'm thinking that there are many great, old games that aren't computer games.
I was thinking how awesome it would have been if someone (preferably GOG) re-released old console games online, bundled with an emulator (like they do with old games and DOSBox today). There are many games from back in the days that I either haven't played or haven't finished, and to be able to play them again on my computer (with a controller, for those of us who owns one,) would be nothing short of awesome.
Of course, one could always go through the trouble of buying the consoles and the games like one did back in the days, but this poses many problems for me (and probably most other people).
A) I don't own a TV.
B) Even if I did, it would probably not be compatible with all the consoles I'd like to get my hands on.
C) It can be pretty difficult to find a console that still works.
D) It can be pretty difficult to find games that still work.
E) Both the console and the games can be ridiculously expensive.
F) Some console games have zone restrictions, something that doesn't mix well with my being a European living in the States, who finds herself flying back and forth regularly.
I have downloaded emulators for the consoles I have and created images of my games, but there are many more games I'd love to own. (For example, I don't have either Silent Hill or RE for my PS1, both of which I'd love to own.)
I realize that many of the most popular titles of previous consoles are re-released on newer consoles, but that doesn't really help those of us who find ourselves traveling a lot. For me (and many others, I believe) it would simply be more convenient to be able to play these games on our computers.
What do all of you guys think? Would it be awesome to be able to grab old console games online and play them on our computers?
(I wrote shortly about this in another post I wrote here, so if you feel like you've read this before, this is probably where you've found it.)
