Seriously considering getting it for my dad for father's day.

He loves his puzzles and he loved Myst.

How does it compare to the original?

Are there other games that are very similar to Myst on GOG's catalog?
If he liked Myst, he'll probably love Riven. If he loved Myst... you probably couldn't get him a better present.
What's there to consider? Get it!

Oh, and realMyst is also something to consider since it has an additional bonus Age that links it to Riven.

Oh, and once he beats them, play URU Online with him for co-op puzzle solving! It's free!
Riven is amazing. If he loves puzzles, this is the epic puzzle game. Since he loved Myst, Riven is just a slight bit better. I love both games, even though I'm crap with puzzles. :P

GET IT FOR HIM! :D

EDIT: I tried RealMyst, but they redid the voice acting I thought, and it just didn't compare (for me) to the original. :P

I loved Myst, but Riven was just crap. I'm sorry, but it's not just that you frequently have to wonder all over the island to complete different portions of the same puzzle, but it's the hunt the pixel gameplay on top of that which really killed it for me.

I know that there are folks that loved it, but there seems to be a tendency towards loving it or hating it with few people in the middle.
Riven is just as captivating as Myst was from a gameplay perspective.
There are little things that set it apart from its predecessor, mainly that there is just one huge world rather than many small worlds, which is what @hedwards basically noted as a flaw.

He is right with the wander around-part, but if your father plays the game for the immersion through the beautifully crafted landscapes he will not be disappointed!

Also, Riven is a lot longer than Myst because the puzzles are just that much harder!
Riven is the best game ever made, period.

The entire series sits high above on a category of its own when compared to everything else and Riven is the best of the lot, so yeah, it's a great gift for your dad for sure.

Amerzone is probaly the game that shares more similarities with the Myst games on gog's catalogue btw.
I don't know about "the entire series." 5 was lame.
Riven is awesome. After IV, Riven is the best Myst game around.

I have no idea what you're talking about, there never was a Myst 5 and anyone who says otherwise is a filthy liar.

Right, the main reason I posted that was to point out that it's not necessarily going to be well received by some folks, even if they loved Myst. I remember the reviews being less than stellar. I played a bit because it was bundled with my first DVD ROM, but I lost interest quickly because it wasn't laid out with the same meticulous care that Myst had been.

I just kind of felt like some of the puzzles required leaps which weren't particularly intuitive, and one couldn't always be sure whether there was another part of the puzzle somewhere else. Plus, I could never figure out how to keep track of my progress in various puzzles.

Thankfully, the GOG version frees the player from having to do that hideous disc swap that many people had to endure with the CDROM version.

OTOH, I'm sure that it is a great game for some people, I just didn't like that sometimes failing to point exactly at a spot would render a puzzle unsolvable until discovering the point.
I should get Riven. I borrowed it for the PSOne from a friend a long time ago, then he let me keep the copy. I don't recall anything specific, but I do recall thinking well of it.
Thanks for all the feedback, it was most helpful ;).

Last question:

Does someone have to have an existing account for you to gift him a game?

I assume the email is sufficient (I specify his email and he can create an account after I bought him the game)?

Riven is easily the best Myst-style adventure game I've ever played. Like everyone else has said, if he liked Myst he'll love Riven.

Yes, he'll get an email with a code. All he has to do is create an account and put the code in to redeem the gift.

That's the beautiful thing about Riven - in order to understand its logic, you essentially need to understand Gehn's logic and NUMBER 5 EVERYWHERE. It takes a specific mindset.

Oh, and a fat notebook and several pencil cases.
