I've been holding out because I'm low on cash (last week's paycheck was only half a paycheck), so I've been asking on the gifting thread for either to no avail. This isn't really a problem. I mean, I never expected to get it, but I don't get my next paycheck until the day after the Summer Sale ends, so I'm going to dip into my account for now. That told, should I get RCT 1 or 2? I've never played anything like them except for the entirely different Sim Theme Park (which was also back when I was 6 years old or something like that), so I have literally no idea what to expect from them.
2
More content, more options, more fun.
Keep in mind, however, that it has been a while since I played the games, but I do remember that being the case.

I think they're pretty similar to be honest but 2 does have extra content. However, you might want to read the review by cathal on the Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 page.
Good post! I was wondering exactly the same thing myself yesterday oddly enough. I want to know which one to play before moving on to number 3, as 1 and 2 do look very similar other than 2 having visibly better graphics.
It's been a long time for me too, but if you're only gonna get one, I'd go with the second one for the same reasons already stated. Plus you can import rides from the RCT1 into RCT2, so that gives you even more options for downloading tracks made by others.

But the 2 lacks some micromanagement and park administration custom options. Take a look at the GOG users reviews at the sale page and check the RCT forum here.
While 2 is excellent I would go for the first game. It has to be, in my opinion, one of the finest games I've ever played.
