I don't like games that accentuate my cheekbones.
Temple of the Roguelike is a great site with news and reviews of the roguelike scene.

Of the major roguelikes, NetHack and ADoM are classics (as are the many Angband variants), but haven't seen any development for a long time. Dungeon Crawl and ToME are still being developed, especially ToME looks very promising. Last time I checked (about a year ago), it was very unbalanced (due to its beta status), but already quite enjoyable.
Don't forget the adventure mode in Dwarf Fortress.
It's not dangerous enough, take this:

I thought enough of the worlds population had been corrected with the spelling of Rogue with the mass rantings that went on with DA:O....

still made me smile

Well, OP said "no Steam" and nothing about, for example, Desura. :P DoD is on Desura also.

No way. It's such a typical and frequent mistake that it will probably be accepted as an alternative spelling at some point in the future. This is how language develops, even it makes us cringe at times. ;)

And then are titles like The Rougelike ... ;)
