Apologies if this has been addressed already, but why do GOG games have issues with user permissions? Why do they make the config files only editable by administrators, then have their launchers run as admins?

I don't know about you, but I just manually edit the permissions on the folder to allow users full control and then run it as a standard user. Problem solved. The way I see it GOG can fix this very easily by giving users access to edit the config files.

For example DOSBOX games all have their configs this way, so you can't change any settings unless you run the launcher as an admin. That's kind of asinine.

I mean if you weren't logged in as an admin and didn't have an admin password - how the hell would you change settings? You can't.

Steam games, and pretty much any other PC games, do not function this way. Only GOG. I propose they fix this so that I don't have to manually edit every single one of my GOG games folder permissions.


EDIT - Oh and as a recent example - Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded has this very problem. It wants to run as admin and that is silly. I just edited the folder and disabled "run as admin" in the shortcut.

Why is this a problem ? You can change that very easily if you have a problem with it.

But running as administrator sorts a lot of problems (like save files not writing)...

The saves don't specifically BECAUSE the folder isn't writable. Simply changing that permission fixes everything. I'm just asking why this isn't fixed.

It's not proper to have apps run as administrator unless they need to make system changes. Do you guys run steam as admins or something?

GOG are gradually updating their installers to use C:\GOG Games instead of Program Files. This resolves this and other problems.
