You might be aware that steam and gamersgate (i think) have released some "classic" Sega Games for the pc - I am assuming they are emulated.

I find it strange that they have released, for example, Streets of Rage 3, but not 2. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had tried them and whether they played ok?
Streets of Rage 2 is already out, look closer.
The new releaseas are the fifth set of games. There's already about 40 other ones that have been released over the years. Most of the ones I've bothered to load up, including SoR2 have worked fine.
They finally released a fifth pack?

*loads up steam and sees* :

Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2-4, Revenge of Shinobi, Wonder Boy in Monster World, ect.

About damn time..
cool, thanks.

I have a working genesis plugged in to my tv but I never play it. I guess i would be wasting my time getting them on my pc as well...
They've recently released a new sega portable device with 18 games includer, though they're master system games I think, and not Mega drive /Genesis Games.

I kinda lose interest in emulators and new portable devices (though gonna get it) when I have the original console and cartridges.
Seeing as they are completely DRM-free, even in Steam (you can install it, copy out the directory and run it completely independently of Steam), I picked up the fifth package yesterday. Was a bargain at €7.50, especially with the three Phantasy Star games, Beyond Oasis and Monster World.

Sure, it's basically just emulator ROMs and I could have downloaded them illegally (actually, I had downloaded them illegally), but seeing as Sega is offering me the chance to have them legally at a fair price, why not?
Question. Someone mentioned the way the games were emulated isn't that great (forget the bulk of the discussion but it stopped me from buying them til now) and to avoid purchasing these. any comments about this?.

I have the gold disk and the emulation seems very good to me. All the layers in the games I've played are present and correct, transparency displays correctly... the sound is brilliant and punchy. It features save slots & it has 4 graphical options... original, linear (duplicate pixels up to the resolution so still pixellated but at a higher resolution), tv (Scanlines)& enhanced (I mostly use enhanced as it's like expanded without jaggies but can lead to excessive blending.) It also sports vertical synch.
You can play in the original aspect ratio but also play in 16x9/16x10 and this doesn't noticeably distort the graphics. I'd try and get the gold collection (packs 1-4) if you're wanting them though as I can see it being a little clumsy for individual games due to the menu system etc (though it's nice enough when it comes to collections.)

Oh crap Alex the Kid, isn't that the one where you face off against bosses in contests of paper, rock, scissors?

Yeah that's the one or at least one of them, there was two Alex Kidd games that did that Alex Kidd in Miracle world on the Master System/Mark 3 and Alex Kidd in the enchanted castle on the Genesis/Megadrive.

Obviously the classics packs have the Enchanted Castle one.

I got the entire collection off Steam and I can honestly say the emulation is spot on the only real issue alot of people have is the menu's interface and the lack of online multiplayer, which I can get especially the menu interface as it has no options to sort the games the way you like and is pretty bare bones but again the games are fine.

gameon: Theres also the dreamcast collection. I'm hoping they do more of those.
I maybe in the minority here but I also wouldn't mind seeing a Saturn collection with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter, House of the Dead 1+2, the Panzer Dragoon games, the Saturn Shining games, Story of Thor 2/Legend of Oasis, ect.

gameon: I'd definitely be up for that aswell. I had the playstation in the past, so i missed out on the saturn stuff.
Same here
Does anyone here remember Shadow of the Beast 1 & 2 on the Mega Drive? I'm not sure popularity wise if they count as classics, but I loved them, kind of a dark fantasy side-scroller.
Alien Soldier and Wonder Boy III play fine. I can't speak for Streets of Rage.
