Thunderstone: It is such a shame just how far Sega has fallen, they could have been such a better company. My brother still has his Sega Genesis and a wide library of games. This brings to mind just how much Sega is squandering their previous licenses; Vectorman, Marko, Comix Zone, Ecto the Dolphin. Anybody remember those games?

Does Sega take advantage of these; no. Instead they keep relying on Sonic. I like Sonic, but I think they need to give him a break for a while.

Not to mention the short sighted designs they made in the early 90's: http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/01/03/the-downfall-of-sega-part-1
Man...both of the Vectorman games were so Badass...
Sega died long time ago.
Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager, Total War and Aliens. They have all these franchises especially the Sonic,FM and Total War ones you'd expect them to make a huge profit. Where the fark does all the money go??????????
Gotta wonder why they don't get back into the console market? (yes iOS and Android is the current 'trend' but they are all ****ing little games for the ultra cheapo people).

Roman5: They have published a lot of SHIT but on the other hand, they have put out some quality stuff as well, their Collaboration with Platinumgames resulted in some of the best games this gen and they have finally gotten the Sonic games back on track

They put out more good games this generation than Nintendo, that's for sure

StingingVelvet: Their PC output is pretty thin other than Total War... what console greats have they released this gen? I loved Alpha Protocol but I know I am in the minority on that one.

I'm still pissed PC never got Condemned 2.
They released some fucking great games:

Yakuza 3,4
Vanquish
Bayonetta
Sonic Generations
Condemned 1,2
Madworld
Rez HD
Valkyria Chronicles

Yeah, not pc releases, but it pays to have at least one console.

I'll be sad if sega folds in the future, they have such an excellent series of games that really, really needs to be remastered and released. It's a good start with JSR HD, but they MUST release shenmue 1 and 2 for a game that'll sell like gangbusters.

If they'd stop making half baked marvel junk game tie ins and released newer games on steam/xbl/psn then they can get back on track.

Thunderstone: Maybe people just need to be reintroduced and those games given a chance in the spotlight. Heck, clearly there is a market for retro games, otherwise this site wouldn't have lasted. Just take a look at the Wii Virtual console.
Well reselling old games and investing in revivals are two different things. Anyway if they thought they would make money from a new Vectorman they would make one, but they don't. I don't think you saying "dude that game was awesome" means much to them.
that 7.1 is actually what it will COST sega to downsize.

like for peoples severance pay and other legal fees ( for canceling licensed IPs and what not), basically the Sammy part of "Sega Sammy" doesn't want to pay western employees anymore and had to concoct a reason to cut those branches .... the western sales out of Sega, while not amazing, are more than decent enough to justify their size and presence.

Sammy just don't give a fuck since all they are interested in is selling/promoting Pachinko machines and shipping the Yakuza series of games (it's just a total coincidence that the Pachinko industry is pretty much run by the Yakuza AND the "Yakuza" series of games is the only thing that Sega puts a AAA grade level of effort twards)

I like their Aliens games, I loved Alpha Protocol, I love Total Wars, I enjoy Football Manager. For me they have pretty good PC games.

I think we can agree to disagree on this, but I still think it is a waste to let the classics just stay sitting in the dust when they can be given new life.
I hear Binary Domain is really good, but like Vanquish it is selling poorly. It's probably games like these we wont see more of from Sega from now on, unfortunately, rather than the sure sellers they have in any Sonic The Hedgehog or Football Manager. In the immediate future, could it mean the cancelation of something like Anarchy Reigns from Platinum Games?
all this is also probably why Platnum has been courting projects from other publishers (like MS: Rising) instead of sticking to SEGA.

... not to mention Yu finally getting the fuck out of there.

I'm not saying it isn't a shame, I am just saying companies do what they think will be profitable. You have a specific taste and history but that doesn't mean there are 5 million out there like you who would buy a AAA Vectorman game.

Now where you might find some common ground is an HD side-scroller on XBLA or something, but Sega has an idea of what that would sell due to the Sonic XBLA games and they aren't pursuing others, so... probably not that great.

It's a new gaming industry man... you and I (and Sega) are dinosaurs.

StingingVelvet: 'snip
Out of curiosity, what is it about these older games like Vectorman that you don't think mainstream gamers would like? Even if remade
avatar
nijuu: Where the fark does all the money go??????????
Too many project 'managers', administrators and bunch of other people that don't do anything related to game development, and not enough developers to make more games, probably.

Well the general IP had limited following due to its age and the different market, so basically you are selling it like a new thing. It would need a large budget and one hell of a marketing campaign and even then it's risky due to the abstract nature of it.

I mean, why do you think they WOULD?
