Navagon: I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I just got a new GPU before this patch hit. It was looking so nice and running so smoothly too. But only for a day or two.
If downloading an updated installer doesn't resolve it another option would be to install the version that worked and then block the launcher's internet access to bypass the patch check.

I really hope it doesn't come to that though. I need the arrow keys for movement and it wasn't until the first couple of patches that the game was really all that playable for me. I haven't really had a lot of luck with this game so far, if truth be told. :(

Navagon: Witcher 2 is an amazing game. Equally amazing is how fucking dumb adding a disc check to a digital download game that started out DRM-free. I still can't get my head around just how fucking dumb that is. If the bloody update wasn't so insistent then I could at least tell it to piss off and leave my copy untainted. But there we go...
I've read that a Internet connection check was added after Patch 2.0 if you run the Launcher.exe. You can bypass the check if you run witcher2.exe. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by the disc check though. I haven't had that particular problem.

Unless Notch is lying, Beth is suing for using "Scrolls" in the title. They are not suing for trying to trademark it.
I'm not saying Notch is lying, but he is only telling his side of the story. I don't even blame him for that, he has a vested monetary interest in making his side more believable. But you can't decide who's in the right based on facts provided by one of the two parties involved.

On topic: I'd definitely say Skyrim. I liked the Witcher 2 a lot (at least what I've played of it) but Skyrim is brilliant. I read a review that called it a "fantasy Indiana Jones simulator" and they nailed it. I haven't had as much fun exploring a world since Morrowind.

To be fair, decide which genre you like more. If you like wide open worlds to explore, with zero railroading and dozens of secrets to discover, Skyrim. If you like moderately linear story driven RPGs with an emphasis on tactics and preparation and excellent plotting and writing, go with TW2.
Thanks all for the comments. They have helped. And thanks for the b day wishes too! I think I am really geared up for Skyrim now (and my system will probably handle that better). Witcher 2 one day, but I am just too excited for Skyrim. So Skyrim it is!

Peace
i never got interest in witcher 2

Skyrim is epic rly LF it

Paul_cz: And so you have GOG version? If so, how is it possible? When you reinstall form scratch, is it not working correctly? Especially now that GOG version is updated to 2.0 already?
Woo! No disc check! Happy days!

Just in case my comments put you off, the GOG version of Witcher 2 has been fully updated and there's no disc check in that. It's a bloody good game. Possible GotY for me. Even after all that sodding hassle. But yes, you might as well wait for the Christmas sale at this point.

weird.

you ask for a suggestion and majority of people tell you to get TW2.
Yet you decide to get skyrim.

Of course there is nothing wrong with your choice. but why ask if you don't follow the advice :)
or did you ask that question on beths forum?

Beth being quite about that does not help the situation. They should make official statement when that went public. They did not as far as I know. So screw them.

That's a really weird attitude to take. Legal cases are for the courts to decide, not internet lawyers, and quite frankly should be left in the courts. You don't see defence lawyers going to TV explaining their evidence and arguments to get public support. Personally I think Notch should just stop talking, because he really doesn't understand the case and certainly is not helping his lawyers at all.

Roman5: Witcher 2 on GOG now, enjoy the exclusive free content and free DLC

Buy Skyrim GOTY when it comes out if you want

issue resolved
TW2 is cheap and Skyrim (and its inevitable multiple DLCs) will be on a deep discount over the holidays and especially later next year. What's more it'll be patched and a crap ton of mods will be available to you day 1 for it if you wait.

It won't happen, Skyrim will sell fine, but it would be nice if, just once, a company that deserved to have poor sales did. Well, I guess they thought DA2 sales were poor (and they were way below projections) but they still sold a ton of units even though it was a dog by all accounts.

Glad you fixed it, although I still wonder WTF was the problem. I had the game since release, I always patched when new patch came out, and I never had a single problem.

not weird. notch is one of the biggest personalities in video game and huge multimilion company is attacking him. he uses as as defense because he does not have million of dollars to throw at lawyers.
beths not saying anything about the case is evidence that they cannot say anything which would make us side with them
therefore
screw them.

I think that somehow, for some reason it just decided to give me the retail patch. But surely even that had its DRM removed by that point anyway? Yeah, I don't get it either. But thanks to you guys for pointing it out as I've got a working copy again.

Why don't GOG announce updates? It's one of the things that Steam gets so right that GOG gets so wrong.
Witcher 2 feels a lot more solid and calculated - well balanced and polished.

With Skyrim, you get a more open game, exploration, crafting, looting. The trade-off is that the game is badly balanced - by just pickpocketing alone, you can go up from skill level 18 to 85 in a few hours and go from level 5 (the level I was when I reached the city) to level 20 - this without seeing any combat.

I hope a mod fixes this but there's a lot more that feels unbalanced/too easy: you can pickpocket without stealthing meaning there's no extra skill to it, picking plants ALWAYS works, you can easily take on monsters way above your level, stealing seems easier too, you can steal stuff they have equipped now, a lot of places let you steal stuff under 50 gold so you end up picking everything up that isn't nailed down, etc. This leads to me having mountains of gold and being able to afford my own home fully furnished in no time. I just lack the challenge really - and I play this on the second hardest setting.

Skyrim is still a fun game - but the fun comes from improving skills, exploring and questing and not from the challenge.

Wait, what's bad about that? I play Morrowind as a thief/assassin now and while I have killed a few people, I've never been in an open combat and I got to level 9 by pickpocketing, few stealthkills, bantering, sneaking and ... Um ... Jumping. Mostly no combat at all. I love that.

If the pickpocketing is too easy, well... That's another thing entirely (I don't just keep increasing stealth via that because it's bloody hard in Morrowind)
