If that is so, I want my augmentations! But seriously what is wrong with people these days? Does it seem like everyone who is in power enjoys trying to screw us over on a daily basis?
Is anyone on capital hill not a giant prick? I mean besides the Supreme Court but I'm not sure on those.
You guys are lagging behind. We're way ahead of you when it comes to the destruction of freedoms here in the UK. Anti-terrorism laws that mean anyone can be arrested for any reason and be detained without trial. The Digital Economy Act not only works on the principal of guilty until proven innocent but puts that judgement in the hands of corporations.

Yay!

With SOPA about to clamp down on the net & NDAA about to clamp down on the people who complain, this virus being created now seems too good to be coincidental.

MobiusArcher: The media frequently puts a bad slant on this stuff, and makes it sound like a bigger deal than it really is. Im not saying that that is necessarily what is going on here. Its just that there are always two sides to these things, and no matter how fare the author is trying to be, there is always some bias there.

jefequeso: There's some truth to this. On the one hand, I think that people SHOULD be concerned about(or at least aware of) the possible implications of this bill. On the other hand, we're often too quick to make a huge deal about things, and more often than not it's an unrealistic reaction to something that turns out to be fairly pedestrian in practice. It's a fine line to walk.

That being said, in this case I think an overreaction is almost necessary in order to make damn sure that the government pays attention.
+1 to this line of thinking. It probably wouldn't turn into 9pm curfews and arrest squads spiriting people away in the dark of night, never to be heard from again. However, that does not mean the citizens should not be aware that there is some questionable legislation being put out there, and should not voice their legitimate concerns. As you say, it's a fine line between what they are allowed to do and what they will actually do. But giving the blanket authority to do much worse... that's heebie-jeebie territory.
Government wanting more power over its subjects. News at 11!

(sorry, could not help. But current governments are fucked up beyond belief anyway in vast majority of countries anyway..)

...but at least you still have Ron Paul and Gary Johnson. I wish I could say we have such a politicians here.

If freedom (of speech, and whatever) is your thing, frankly I don't know if the northern Europe countries are necessarily your thing. I think freedom of speech is kept in a much higher value in e.g. US, even if it can be classified as "hate speech".

Regulating and censoring the internet is just as much, if not even a bigger, topic around these parts of the world than in US, methinks.
