Yeah, Xonar DS, registry conflicts, periodic meltdown of my registry.

any better cards for me to actually enjoy sound with?
I'd try using CCleaner on your registry first. I've never had a problem with my Xonar.

I'm also using 7. If you have a registry problem and not a hardware problem then replacing the hardware isn't really the best option, to say the least. Not least of all because it could cause you problems with the replacement as well.

I've looked around, it's a known issue dude.

Even with the most recent driver (7.12.8.1794)?

You're right, though; ASUS screwed up the Windows 7 drivers for the Xonar DS big-time.

I dunno dude, it was working fine (after nuking my computer) for a good 3-4 months now i've turned it on and it's not detecting it again, I'm not sure what driver ver it is
I know what the issue is and how to resolve it without making the problem worse, I just don't want to do it again in another 3-4 months.

Hey, might be completely irrelevant, but, my card (SB X-Fi Gamer) stopped detecting a while ago, i thought it was dead and got a replacement. I popped in the replacement card, everything was fine, but then something possessed me to try the old card again - and it worked! I still don't know wtf was the problem, but you might try removing the card, putting in something else, then trying the old one again.

On the replacement side, I'd say Asus Xonar DS and Creative SB Fatality X-fi titanium pro are the cream of the crop, with Asus more suiting the audiophile types, and X-fi more gaming oriented. There is also the newer version of the SB called Recon3D Fatality Pro, but I haven't had a chance to get acquainted with it yet.
It's too early to properly celebrate but I think I've got this bitch sorted for now. I'll replace the card the end of the year I think.

Re-inserting it into the slot made it recognise it, but there were a few problems after that, it's in a different PCI slot for now.

this kinda makes me think there MAY be something wrong with the motherboard but hey... i have 2 extra PCI slots anyways.
